I had the whirpool washer running last week, after a few loads the belt started to slip again, I tried to tighten the belt a little and now the belt is hardly moving. When it does get moving the washer is slower than the gentle cycle. Am I correct to think I should get a new belt?

The washer did about 10 loads of wash and everything seem much cleaner. It was also great to have the suds saver.

Thanks

Is the belt at the end of its adjustment range?  Per observation, is it appreciably worn/cracked/fraying?

Examine the pump.  A pump gone to bad bearings is a common cause of belt-drive sluggishness.  If the belt can't move but the motor is running, the motor pulley will wear it down, sometimes burn and break it.

Don't tighten the belt excessively, that'll cause a strain on the various pulley bearings ... motor, pump, spin & tranny.  It should deflect 1/2" in/out (1/4" each direction) with approx 6 lbs of force applied halfway between the motor and tranny pulleys.

Dadoes

The belt is not worn or cracked and does deflect about 1/4". So I guess the pump is going. How do I see f the pump is going bad? Or should I just try to find a replacement pump?

Thanks for your help.

WP WASHER PROBLEM

You can also try running a load and see if the pump or possibly the motor pulley is too hot to touch this would indicate a bad pump or in the case of a hot motor pully a slipping belt. Its really hard to diagnose a problem this way there are literately hundreds of different things that could be wrong to cause slow agitation.

I'm not familiar with Wirly/Kenmore washer design, but with Maytags, if you remove the belt and turn the water pump pulley by hand, it immediately becomes very apparent if there's a problem

Does the Whirlpool/Kenmore belt drive water pumps have an oiling port like the Maytags?

What year/era machine is this?

Personally, I'd scoop it up from the front with a hand-truck (moving dolly) protected by carpet, lay it face down still on the hand truck, and then work on it from underneith.

Definately pop the belt off and check for pulleys that are stiff to turn. Also, if this is the machine with the spring loaded clutch sitting between the transmission and bottom of the tub, the clutch friction material could be ground away, and/or the springs are broken.

The model number is LPA7805W2. The washer is from the early sixties. I had posted pictures on previous post when I first got the machine. It is post#377995 thread# 24355. I do not have time this evening to try any of the suggestions (school shopping).

Austinado16 can you please e-mail how to check the pump to see if it is bad.(email addres in my profile). I am still learning how to fix these machines myself. I also have another Whirlpool that needs a pump and the Push button Kenmore need a cord, motor and two way valve. Also I notice that the self cleaning lint filter is not connected to the pump or two way valve, shouldn't it be connected to one of these. Since you have rebuilt these machines I can really use your knowledge.

Thanks

David
