When I was a little boy I longed for my Mom to buy Wonder Bread. She always bought Kilpatricks Thin Sandwich Sliced white bread. I recall being in Safeway when I was about 5 and asked her to buy a loaf of Wonder Bread, to which her reply was negatory. I remember telling her that she must not want me to grow strong and healthy on 7 different ways, which was the Wonder Bread slogan on TV at the time. I beleive her retort to that comment was something along the lines of, "Bulls**t Eddie", LOL.
Now I wouldn't touch Wonder Bread with a 10 foot pole.

It's never left Canada.. We had Wonder Bread home delivery when I was a kid back in the day.  Along with the bread they also had all the other stuff like twinkies, cupcakes and sno balls but it was rare that my mother would buy those for us.  I go through a lot of bread but only buy Wonder now for my peanut butter sandwiches.. To me it's not a peanut butter samwich unless it's on squishy wonder bread. 
 
For some whole grain bread loyalists, . . .

They will eat nothing but whole grain bread EXCEPT when making a PB&J for which Wonder Bread and ONLY Wonder Bread will do.  Do not offer them Weber's or Langendorf or even Helms (now's THAT for a nostalgia kick?) or ANY store brand.

Wonder Bread

Captain Kangaroo show had Wonder Bread, as one of their sponsors. I myself didn't like wonder for PB, and J's, as the whole sandwich would stick to the roof of your mouth. I can remember having to use your fingers, to pry it off the roof of your mouth, and then washing it down with a glass of milk. Ahhh, memories...
My mother always bought store brand bread, for the price. I can remember sales of like 4/$1.00. I always liked whole wheat bread, so much so, White bread actually makes me kind of green, while trying to eat it. Oh Well I Digress...

Never left Canada...

but it sure left Québec.  Probably in 1976 with all the other businesses that were headquarted in Montréal.... LOL

 

Seriously, I haven't seen Wonder Bread in this neck of the woods for decades! 
 
 

 

Didn't even notice it was gone. When I was a kid we ate Wonder. I liked to bake their dinner rolls (yes I know, while other boys were playing football, I wanted to bake). We've been eating Martin's for awhile now. Plus bread from our local Italian bakery. On occasion I'll buy "sonnenblumen brot". German sunflower (seed) bread.
 
I always liked the packaging of Wonder Bread but avoided it like the plague. I hated that squishy doughy bread even as a child. One time my grandma served me roast beef on Sara Lee white bread. She had a conniption fit when I started removing the mushy chunks of bread from the beef and just eating that. She insisted there was nothing wrong with the bread and that I eat it after I told her it was mushy and gross, to which I replied "NO!". Having been used to always getting her way she did not like that!
A few days later I heard her telling my mother what had happened then went on to say how she fixed herself a sandwich on that bread and said "he was right, it was too soggy".

She stuck to the wheat and rye after that, and that was also the last time she tried to force me to eat something.
 
Wonder Bread brand is now owned by Bimbo bakeries. I worked for Hostess /IBC and they owned Wonder Bread and when they decided to go bankrupt, the holding company then decided to sell off the brands to the highest bidder. I can tell you that its not the same bread at all.

Malcolm...I buy that Martins butter bread all the time...very tasty!
 
I've told this story before here, I think...but for those who missed it...

When I was young, I could be a picky eater when it came to bread. At some point, there as a TV ad for Wonder Bread which suggested that it was the bread that kids were just guaranteed to love and adore. I saw that, and suggested maybe my mother should procure a loaf of this magical bread.

To which she said she had already tried it. Apparently, I'd hated it as much as I'd hated everything else...
 
Bread Battles

In Southwest Louisiana there has alway been a battle about which bread was better! Evaneline Maid-motto: Stays Fresh Longer--slightly underbaked and more moist than other breads. Sunbeam--Batter Whipped Advertised its even fine texture (had the MixMaster in the background on the the label, but never affiliated with the appliance company) Holsum--sold about 10 cents less than other brands. This all before the big stores contracted to have their own breads baked at these same bakery factories.

They made sweet rolls and seasonal items that I miss like the pecan rolls with caramel icing. I like making yeast breads and rolls but have never been able to duplicate the light and yet moist texture.
 
I grew up

Having to eat Bosts Multi Grain or Roman Meal....YUCK, If I want hay I will go out in a pasture, Give me plain old white bread, unhealthy or not!
 
There is little I dislike more than Wonder Bread, it's like eating cotton candy.  It makes me cringe.  Soft, floppy, collapses if the butter is just a tad bit hard.  Will never see it in my home.  I only get 12 grain bread, or make my own sourdough rye.
 
Yes, brioche'

make everything richer. It has eggs in it.

I liked the Roman Meal bread personally.
One Christmas we were at my grandma's in Pa. and I asked if she tried it. "Yes, we don't like it."
They were D'Italiano by Tasty bread eaters, but she often made her own.
