Wringer Care

Being born in '55, I was never around a wringer washer at all except at one grandmother who still had a gasoline-powered Maytag when I was quite small. I've seen many demos on YT of wringers in action and have occasionally seen them on display somewhere.

How long does the wringer last? Is there special care to give given to a wringer to make it last longer? If one finds a wringer washer to restore, are replacement rubber wringer inserts available for them?

I've been into typewriters for 50 years and places are getting very, very scarce to get rubber platens replaced. It used to be common 50+ years ago but of course we're all using printers now. With platens on vintage machines like the 25 or so that I own, it's important to periodically roll the platens to a different place or to release the tension rollers to prevent 'flat spots'. Are wringers prone to flat spots also?

Wringer Care

I do not have any information to back this up, but I treat my wringers just like my grandmother did.  When she was done with the wash she released the tension bar and rinsed the rollers with a bucket of water.  I have several wringer washing machines and have only replaced one set on a speed queen.  There is one place in Ohio that still has a supply of replacement parts for speed queens.

When it comes to parts Maytag seems to be still available. I own a Maytag and I must admit that I have been slowly buying parts to rebuild it someday when the time comes.
