New Dishwasher

A year ago I began the task of renovating my kitchen and along with it came brand new appliances. My 30+ year old (still working) appliances had to go. (Most of them are now in storage). I spent a lot of time researching appliances and ultimately purchased what I wanted which was KitchenAid. ( I purchased extended warranties). The new appliances were delivered 10/6/2023. After 35 years of experience with the reverse-rack Maytag/Jenn Air, I had to "learn" a new dishwasher. The result is - I love my new KitchenAid KDTM704KPS. I used to load "Bob Loads" in my old dishwasher and I now do the same in the new one.

New whirlpool, built three rack dishwashers

Hi Michael great to see your new dishwasher. Thanks for all the great photos of this machine.

We’ve been selling quite a few of these and customers so far just absolutely love them have not had any complaints, my only complaint is being so tall I hate bending over for modern dishwashers in general because the lowest rack is pretty close to the floor. I keep trying to get my brother Jeff to get one because he has his dishwasher built up and I think he would love loading and using this Dishwasher

There’s also a Maytag version of this dishwasher we sell quite often.

My only comment is try to get the money back on your service agreement. It’s a waste of money statistically your chances of making out with that or Neil these machines are not giving any real problems , especially in the time that your contract covers you for the first maybe five years.

Hi Mark, these dishwashers are not that expensive when you compare them to the $2000 Miele or Bosch machines and these hold far more and are more reliable in the long run, plus any decent service tech will service these unlike those other brands.

Soft food disposer?

Do those have a soft food disposer so there’s no unsanitary food strainer basket to manually clean?

Been wanting one of those new 3 rack Maytags for a long time.

I'm very impressed with this dishwasher (and the wall oven, cooktop and refrigerator as well).
In regards to my model of dishwasher having a soft food disposer, John would know for
sure. I recall reading somewhere the KA models having a filer that requires cleaning and the Maytag brand models having the disposer. I do not pre-rinse ever and I have not seen anything at the bottom of the dishwasher that needs cleaning.

I have a 604 and it has been flawless. Only complaint, no low rinse aid light.
We use ProWash almost exclusively. I rarely use heated dry because of the fan drying system. Very little remaining water on Tupperware. Cascade actionpacs have worked the best for us. The little filter in the bottom is more for glass and I have never had anything caught in it nor has it needed cleaning.
If you have any questions, just ask. I am fairly knowledgeable of the KA machines.

@combos52 re: reply 4. I was looking at the Bosch, KitchenAid 604 series, or the Maytag MDB8959SKB. I prefer one with the third rack, adjustable height racks (at least the middle one), and adjustable tines. Needs to dry well. Is the Maytag model I am considering the one you referred to? Also, is the KitchenAid 600 series reliable too? I am assuming it similar to the 704 with less features but still basic reliable internals.

I have been reading the other replies with interest too.

The Bosch was appealing because of no more melted plastic, but I am pretty sure most of the stuff I have concerns about would be okay in the third rack. The KitchenAid seemed thoughtfully designed and well built too. I wish KA had a plain black in the 604. The kitchen is pretty viewable, so it's more important that at least the color or finish of appliances match. Normally, I am not picky about that where it doesn't show. For that reason, I lean toward Bosch or MT. But, I think KA or MT would be easier to get parts to fix myself or have it serviced where I live.

I hope to keep this dishwasher at least ten years, is there a reason that the KA is worth the difference over the Maytag? I have seen the KA in person but not the Maytag.

I think it would be easier to get parts and fix a KitchenAid or Maytag. I have been able to keep an old Frigidaire going, so that's important to me.

We bought the 604 model last May which is one step down from your machine and it is a nice machine and it does hold a lot of dishes and glassware. Since we just scrape and load and dont pre-rinse our stuff, when you run the machine it always takes over 3 hours to wash a load of dishes. That I don't like, also I have no clue what portion of the cycle the machine is in when it is on. Dashes on the front control panel are of no help at all. I do know that you can add a dish before the 2:38 mark shows up on the timer as the detergent wash cycle starts around that area.

Actually, when that first started being a thing, I didn't go for it. I wanted a hard food disposer...However, after re-thinking that... I actually PREFER removable filters...

Take my Maytag for example (which is 10 years old now) No issues except for rinse aid dispenser which I don't care about.... anyway - to clean it .. it has to be taken apart.. I often think how nice it would be to have a removable filter that I can just pop out and clean myself..

Are the Maytag versions as good as the Kitchenaid? It's crazy when I check prices the white color is sometimes $200 MORE! Crazy

There is no difference in quality components, and reliability between the KitchenAid and the Maytag versions of the machine, they use the same motors and basic parts. They roll out of the same assembly plant, etc.

There is no removable filter in these dishwashers. There’s only a small plastic trap. That’s just a guard against things like broken glass and olive pits getting into the pump and filtering system. These dishwashers use the spinning, ultrafine filter that whirlpools been using for 10 or 15 years, they’ve continued to perfect this filter. It’s the most sophisticated filter in any home dishwasher in the world.

I’ve been very happy with my Whirlpool engineered Maytag dishwasher that is now at least 5 years old (cleans well, great build quality, very quiet, no nasty food strainer), except its capacity has been disappointing compared to the three rack non-Whirlpool Maytag it replaced.

So this new 3-rack with soft food disposer would be the bomb!

you can truly fit an astronomical amount of dishes in these things and everything still comes out clean, its amazing really.
the kitchenaid/maytag models are both equipped with the same pump unit, which has some sort of macerating drain pump. the kitchenaid models have a 3rd rack with nozzle tubes that spin, whereas I think the maytag one just has a spray jet bar that stays in place. the nozzle tubes are driven off of a small water turbine on the rear of the rack and rotate fairly slowly. they work quite well at cleaning glasses and mugs.
as for the small catch filter on the bottom, it will need cleaning once in a while if you don't scrape fully, it will collect some tough food material (stringy stuff mostly). luckily it rinses easily.

Beautiful dishwasher! I recommended the KA 604 model to friends who needed a new machine last year. However, they listened to the salesman who pushed GE Profile so hard that he practically shoved it down their throats. I was so annoyed I wanted to call BS on the salesman as he droned on about how KA reliability wasn't "what everyone thought it was" and who also told them SQ front loaders were "not worth the money". But it wasn't my $$ so I just kept quiet and let the couple make their own decision.

His big selling point on the GE was the "innovative upper rack bottle wash" feature. Big deal - I asked them how many bottles they actually wash and of course the answer was "0". However, the nephew of one spouse works for a GE division in Albany NY so they went for it. Oh, well... We'll see how this pans out. But then this is a couple who doesn't know what brand washer/dryer they have so I guess the bar isn't high...
