Wonderful to see you having such a great time, I'm just exhausted looking at all those repairs, never mind helping. But this does go to show how much can be achieved when I'm not busy chatting and distracting the workers.

I'm sorry now, I didn't risk divorce by sneaking off from our holiday to join you, if it wasn't for his local government pension scheme !!1 lol,

Hi Ian the hotpoint was scrapped , I got the motor for Steve and that was about it. It had done its job after 28 years so we let it go. Mikeyd the guy in the apron is our good friend Darren in my kitchen playing with the empress. He had all the bedding stripped washed and on the line in less than an hour !

I'm the one in the sunglasses and on photo showing a bit of arse crack lol

Thanks, Ricky. Was having so much fun in my happy pants that I missed some names, but they're all there in a perfect thread. Preachin' to the choir about churning out wash in a wringer. Nothing quicker, nothing better especially if you have two, one to wash, one to rinse. Heaven! And Oh the drama of wringing with the water gushing and the bubbles squeezing.

Maybe next time your Mum will let us see her; she must be wonderful!

If that's one of the Downy balls I brought, I'm glad to see it's been road tested and put to use in Richard's lovely example of a 9605.  How did you find it worked for you?

 

Yep, I discovered my 96700 from 1984 was designed to agitate intermittently during temp-sensed filling on warm washes (around 7 seconds of agitation per minute, the same as wash & rinse agitation when "gentle action" is selected).  I didn't like it doing this.  I disabled it with the helpful advice from Steve.  It still senses the temp during filling and only opens the cold valve once the correct temp is reached.

You can use hair bleach and the sun (or a black-light) to whiten the parts chemically. Here is a video on YouTube about it.

Great thread Mike, you're the ace picture poster.   One day I'm gonna get there again, not just for the warsh but to re visit some of my  relatives in the Durham/N'castle/Hexham area and I really want to get to Pelton Fell where my great gran and grandpa came from .

Greg - as ever when we all get together trouble is time just runs short...at least we managed to road test "Rosalie`s Zero Suds, report to follow !!

Richard 1983 - Ta and see you at the next one at Als, ya need a washer fix, don't forget the powder ha ha...

"Oh Steve", now ya tell us ha ha...just as well Mikey was on the ball otherwise it would have been in bits, I too was convinced it did, theres Hoover for ya if you can make it simplified - DONT !!

Ian, many where modified out in the field by customer request or when being serviced !!I can see why they would use a front loader new gen timer for cost though !!

What can I say, you would have a blast am sure with all those different fangled washers as well as the vintage kitchen in Richards n Darrens home, (who is the guy using the wringer in said pinny !!). The Hotpoint Empress was the workhorse of the UK laundry market, millions sold, my gran had one in 1952 although have just realised this is a later model with the rounded blue enamel tub, the first models had a hexagonal aluminium tub !!

And also the first Hotpoint twintub, quite unique at the time in with the fiberglass spinner tub and filterflow, the spirallator came later. The control knobs on these washers are fragile and remember the ones I found with you when we went To see Larry at his parts store in Ohio, they where used on cookers but they are a perfect match !!

As when we all meet up (cant believe its 9 yrs since we did @ Hoover 100, its all great fun and sharing of knowledge and information, AND as parts are getting rarer its the workarounds and ingenious ways of fixing stuff that amazes me !!

Hi Mathew, you where very much missed and we did think you might have pop over the hills for tea n cake etc ha ha..alas, glad you enjoyed your much needed holiday !! As ever we ran out of time but not laughter and cake !!

Mikey - ta for the link, Hoover steam cleaner ordered, ya played a blinder with yours !!

Hi Mark, we took a selection of detergents up to Richards to share, use and keep there, a duplicate bottle of toploader Tide and the said Downey ball that you kindly brought over last time so we could use in the upgraded Hotpoint Toploader and twinny.

Hi Craig (Optima) we ran out of time to complete all the stuff we needed to this time, Mikey steam cleaned the buttons of grime, interestingly the button least used was the "RESET" button, which was whiter than the others, must be the grease from fingers etc that reacts as well as the plastics used to cause yellowing. Have you used the bleaching method Craig ?

Morning Pete ah yes will be great to catch up with you again and yes when the sun is shining this is Gods own country, Pelton Fell is about 30 mins from Richards, stunning scenary, the local councils have brought back the "Wild Flower Borders" along the roads, a simply stunning difference it makes and a big push in making it lush for the bees and wildlife !!

Durham Weekend Washer Get a Way

Wow, its looks like you guys had a great time again, I feel so lucky to have gotten to meet some of you last month and can't wait to come visit again.I had so much fun working on a few of Als appliances, I always like to take apart new and different appliances.

If you are planning another event this year I may be able to fly over with just a week or twos notice.

I am diffidently going to try to come over in May 18 for Euro-tour in the UK.
