Belts and other info on two different twins

Last fall I joined this forum after buying two different twin tubs at an auction, not knowing at thing about them except they were cool looking - and I had no washing machines of any variety and these were cheap.

I have finally managed to make space for them inside the house and today, went exploring. Overall, they're gorgeous. Reasonably clean. Things move smoothly. They do not have belts. I have the Hoover 0510/0512 and Maytag A50. I hit the archives and saw the exciting experimental belts and would pay a hefty sum to one of you innovative gentlemen if you were to fabricate belts for my two machines!

I noticed the Maytag has what looks like a V belt on the bottom for the pump drive. That one is loose and grainy feeling, so must be replaced. Is that a special belt or can I hit an auto parts or appliance store for something that will work? I didn't see ANY lower belt on the Hoover's pump but I confess I did not get on the floor and nose around in there because at that point, I was on my second washer, the upper belt was shot and the giant spider web was stuck to my head. I called it a day. LOL

I'm not generally mechanically inclined but I know people (okay, so family) and can get assitance for installations and oiling and the like so would love any direction I can get from you expert types before I go poking around inside my cool baby washers and totally mess something up. Belts I know I need. What else might I have to do before I can make a big wet mess in the laundry room?

Looking forward to info, direction and (hopefully) cost plus shipping for some belts! LOL

Hi Diane,

First, CONGRATS on getting the two twin tubs! Do you have or can you post any photos of them?

Next, if you will post the 2 letters at the end of the serial number on the Maytag A50, I can tell you when it was built.

Does the Hoover need a belt too? (I know the A50 does) The spinner belt (also drives the pump) on the A50 MAY be OK, try it first. I believe this belt, like the main drive belt on the older Maytag washers, is designed to slip a bit, so it may not be as bad as you think, IMHO.

Hoover Belts

So the Hoover has no belts at all? Is that correct? There are 3 belts on that machine, I can't understand how they would all be missing, they weren't known for breaking on these. Anywho to the question at hand, the Hoover 500 models use different parts than the later and more common square ones of the 70's. Picture would be helpful. If the machine is white with a turquoise control panel, it's a 0510, if it's Coppertone, it's a 0512 for future reference. Same machine mechanically. The pump and pulsator belt COULD be fabricated like Martin (Yogi) has done, but the spin belt is a very narrow v-belt and would have to be obtained, the spinner motor is torquey and aggresive and this belt sits in a deep groove. I don't know how well a cord-stock alternative would work here. These belts are non-existent for the most part, but Yogi has some tricks for making them, but I don't know if he has an older Hoover to try this on as the measurements of the belt would be different. I have some extra spin belts for these, but for the later models, which I THINK are a different length. Also before you do anything, check the pump pulley underneath and make sure it is still turning easily. This could have been one reason for the belts being missing. The pump can be had for this machine, but not cheaply, there is a link above for one. These also use a different pump than the newer ones. I'll keep an eye out for a spin belt and may try and make some cord stock belts later when I have access to my older Hoovers.

Maytag Belts

The "sloppy belt" underneath the machine is just that a tension belt. This belt should be coarse and loose when the machine is not running. Have you plugged the machine in and tried the spinner and pump with a little hot water in it? The 2 things on the A-50 are the diverter plunger, which is connected to the wash/drain dial on the front and the polyurethane drive belt for the washer. Yogi has had success with the belt on the washer part, the originals are very scarce.

 

So if you put a little water in the wash tub of the machine and it starts filling the bottom of the spinner, then the diverter valve needs to be replaced. You can open the spinner lid and stick a butter knife (BE CAREFUL) in the slot at the front of the opening to start the spinner and watch it. If it has no spin mat the spinner will howl, that's air and nothing to be worried about.

here I am using 1/4" O-Thane hollow cording.......and a connector......this is usually used for sewing machines...but is holding up very well for these applications.....

any Sew n' Vac place should carry it........

MrMaytag/Ted has gotten solid cording, which you super glue together, which is really nice too......works out great for a pump belt on the Hoover as well.....

the Hoover's spin can belt I got from PepBoys Auto.....not sure about all Hoover's, but my motor was adjustable for tension......
