It is not
an exclusively American problem. Over here in Germany, we have a newspaper called "Bild". Literally, "Picture". And, filled as it is with pictures of young people whose qualifications to prevent a milk shortage for the entire planet are not in doubt, it gets read by that group of people which Faux news is aimed at.
(I should mention that public nudity and pictures of naked people are normal, natural and a non-pornographic part of most Wester European life. You will find pictures of beautiful, totally naked men in magazines and journals which have the rank of Smithsonian in the US.)
Anyway, this very same newspaper prints a very thick volume on Sundays called, surprisingly enough: "BILD am Sonntag", always spoken: BAMs. This journal is considerably more neutral and aimed at people who would normally never read BILD during the week.
OK, sorry about the long build-up, but here's the interesting thing. When an article in BAMs conflicts with what the headlines in BILD have been screaming, the editors (same people, same journalists as in BAMs) happily write that that, leftist, liberal-leaning socialist-marxist-scandal-sheet BAMs has been trying to deceive the heartland voters with their lies, again.
And all those people who read BILD believe them, every word.
For those who watch Faux news because they believe in their corporate integrity, nothing you say or do, nothing you 'prove' will change their perspective on reality. They are incapable of neutral reflection, or they wouldn't be watching it in the first place.
Sad, but not an American phenomenon. At all.
I kinda wish folks would be a bit less eager to throw the 'Nazi' charge around. Those monsters killed, tortured and destroyed the lives of over 10 million directly and, if we believe current research (I do) another 30-40 million indirectly. It is a facile and emotionally satisfying charge to level, I do it, too. We shouldn't lessen the suffering of all those Jews, Homosexuals, devout Christians, Roma, handicapped and elderly by debasing that regime of terror through comparisons with the calculating folks at Faux news. The moment they can make money by attacking republicans, they will. Their spite, hatred and dissemination of lies is mercenary, they aren't even genuine enough to search out the truth to hide it.
Hmm, homonym est omen?
