Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I noticed a while back while perusing some UK dept store sites they carry a selection of "American" model appliances, washer/dryers, fridges etc. but for a high price. I wonder if it's a case of people over here figuring the Euro stuff is classier and over there the American stuff is classier.

American Appliances

Our stuff might be somewhat exotic "over there" , but....

I believe the huge size, capacity and convenience are the appeal.

IIRC big fridges, water hogs and self-cleaning (pyrolytic) seen mostly in England

A std size fridge in England and the rest of Europe is still 24" (60 cm) wides IMHO-- which is our smallest size, and what we throw in apartments here.

Hyacinth Bucket (That's "Bouquet", dear) has a 24 incher that fits under-the-counter. T-I-N-Y !

Not only are appliacnes there plug-and-play (except electric stoves) they are all 24" wide!!! Can play musical chairs!

T/L latch was required

Not sure if the law in the UK has changed, but at one time the law was such that even T/L machines had to have a lid lock that kept the thing locked even during the agitation portions fo the cycle/phase.

The Maytags I had seen in a public Laundromat in London had added a SS heavy-duty surface-mounted device to do this at the front of the lid.

Lid locks

The TLs sold for domestic use here in the UK don't have lid locks, and can be opened at any point in the cycle. Maytags and current Whirlpools will just stop altogether when the lid is opened. The Admiral TL by Maytag is the only exception, as it will agitate with the lid up but not spin. For home users, one of the selling points used by the manufacturers is that you can add laundry after the cycle has started, so I don't think adding a lock would go over too well with consumers.

For private commercial use I don't think a lock is mandatory... Whirlpool commercial TLs don't have them, yet Maytag and Huebsch do.

When it comes to public or communal use, such as launderettes or shared laundry rooms, a lid lock is required by law. Vended TLs will already have one fitted, any non-vended model without a lid lock must be modified to include one. These machines will typically allow you to open the lid during fills, but not once agitation or spin has started.

Lid locks

..ahh thanks for clearing that up.

IIRC, our Whirlpools here will agitate with the lid up, as did GE, Speed Queen etc

Maytag definitely stopped all action. (how quick was that bypassed in my home.. LOL)

My Kenmore portable-compact "new design" would stop all
action too. Nothing a plastic molly plug (type of wall anchor for hollow walls)cant fix!

Newbie Poster

Hi all, wel this is my first post, and boy am I excited to be making it! Never seen a site like this before and now Im hooked, I LOVE washing machines and Dishwashers, esp the old ones, and guess what Im only 25!!!! LoL
Ok I was reading with interest this thread on washers in the Uk, so thought as Im an English man Id add my pennys worth.
Ok one thing that I dont get is the price difference, here in the UK you buy front loaders dead cheap everyone uses them in England, and its rare to find a top loader other than in the Laundrette, (Laundromat?). In those we do have the maytag mostly washers and dryers.
If we do want a top loader for our homes, there are only a few brands to choose from, being maytag, admiral and Whirlpool. AND THEY COST!!! I mean even the cheapest top loader here is like £400, which is $730!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess thats a lot for a top loader over there? And i dont beleive its import costs either - Its cos us Brits love anything American, so we are charged top dollar to have it, your fridges too are also very expensive here.
Strange cos once we had a lot of top loaders in england, we loved twin tubs, but the change went to front loaders.
The biggest driving force here tho is cost and economy, remember our electricity and water costs a lot more than yours, so lots of development has gone into less energy and water. Also i think in europe there is a general concern for the enviroment, and a lot of people cannot justify the amount of water used, i think its a mentality thing. I mean to me, cos our front loaders are smaller, we have to do like 2 - 3 washer to equal one wash in a 22Lb top loadeer, so in fact the top loader probibly works more efficient than the front loader! ALso this paranoia about the enviroment has led to a real cut back in water use, my current modern front loader dosnt even use a drum full of water, most english machines not just wet the clothes and tumble them about. You do not see the water in the machine like you used too when i was a kid. lot of this is down to European directives that make it illegal to make things here that dont meet guidelines, and i think there was a thing last year to ban top loaders altogether cos of the water they used!!!!! Madness!!!!!!
Hmm its funny to hear you all think our appliances are tiny, I guess they are, everythings small here tho, even a car that we would call family would be a compact to you guys.
Maybe the infra structures different, ie more local shops here, so we tend to buy less food but more often, so hence the small fridges. Hmm making me think now, its an interesting subject.
Mind you our food comes in smaller sizes, we got COSTCO here now, and our ovens just cannot cope with a pizza from there - have to cut them in half to bake!!!! LoL
Oh god look at all I have typed, ok Ill sign off, thanks for reading if you made it this far, Its interesting how laundry can vary from country to country!

Dishyjohn

Welcome aboard,...interesting points. My favorite TV shows happen to be several english comedies:

Keeping up appearances
As time goes by
waiting for God
Last of the summer wine

Have a ball looking through all the collections the many members here have.

The u.s. washing machine landscape here is changing too. We are seeing more and more front load machines now than ever before.

It was nearly the same here years back regarding fl washers,...you mostly saw them in laundromats. Westinghouse for many years was the only u.s. manufacturer of fl's for home use in this country.

Well once again, welcome to this club and enjoy.

Pat

and guess what Im only 25!!!!

We've got members onhere that are so young, you're an "old guy" in comparison. This all good, this is how knowledge is passed onto future generations.

Welcome Dishyjohn

Welcome to a great forum with good people like youself, and a place you can be yourself! We are glad you are with us!

A decent T/L is a $400 Sears (Kenmore) model made by Whirlpool. It was the best seller when I worked for Sears selling appliances. In comparison a F/L here is/was at least 50% more money.

IMHO- F/L are expensive here in the US because the fixed & "overhead" costs (think accounting) are still being spread over a smaller nubmer of units, therefore each unit gets a higher "penalty" allocated to it.

Also there is the concept of "Risk versus reward" new (to us)products like T/L machines with familair brand mnames give addiotnal risk to the seller/manufacturer. To cover that risk a greater reward/price is demanded. It is not yet a "sure thing"

Maybe similar in UK? The cost of importing a water-hog T/L, as well as "specialized" 220v /50hz components probably adds additional costs.

I wrote also in another thread that in the US, Uncle Sam (federal gov't) collects income taxes from us up-front and we dont have a VAT (value-added-tax) built into every price. so to both sides of the pond our prices appear to be lower.

Again a fond "Hello and weclome"

..and keep dishing, we want to hear from you a lot!!

A little about me

Wow - thankyou SO MUCH all of you for the warm welcome, never been so accepted, I guess were a great bunch. I thought since Im the new boy and all, id let you know some about me and also put on a pic so u can see me too!.
Ok im 25 years old and just finishing University, literally my last exam is this friday!. I studied my BSc in Multimedia Communications, which is a posh word for Networking, Website design and Flash animation / programming. Boring I KNOW!!! Id much rather be a washng machine service engineer! I am from a place in england called Derby, in the middle of England, just a few minuites away from Nottingham, where robin hood lived. Its nice here, very green and typical middle England, lots of castles! LoL
Not sure what Ill go into yet but I need to get some money together so Ill take anyjob, By Jan 2006 im hoping to move to Canada of America, however America is looking more toublesum as I have to prove I can do a job an American cannot! Eeeek! But I think Id be great for your country, and would work hard, so wach this space!
I have loved white goods since I was a little boy and have always been fasinated with washing machines, when ever my parents got a new one, I used to take the old one apart in the back garden to see how it all worked, so i followed the progression from manual timers to digital computers in machines.

One great thing about front loaders we have here is the usefull ness of the door window, the last machine that broke down , I salveged the window, and I now have a great salad bowl!!!!!! he he eh always gets attention at parties!

I love dishwashers too, and would love to find an old top loading one to try to restore as a project. Hard to come by fixer - uppers over here as it was mostly America that had all these old great machines, you really dont find them here. Pity tho as Id love to start a project like the ones listed - Id need all you guys help tho too!

Id love to be able to come to the convention this year, so if I get a job in time and some money i might hop on a plane and come, Ill have to look into where it is and accomodation, but Im sure that should be easy to sort out.

Hey kirk280980 - was wondering where in England you are? Were the same age I beleive!

Hmm well thats about all I can think of for now, at least you al know who i am, instead of a name on a scree, I also attached my pic so you can see what I look like, I am normal - well top half , maybe its the 11 toes thats set me out from the crowd?? LoL JOKE!

Anway oll be back on the board tonight with you all, Ill have to take a phoo on my washer dryer if ya interested, mine has a special show cycle built in that washes sports shoes and trainers!!!! Cool eh!

Oh yeah is there a chatroom any of you all use, I also have MSN messenger and AOL messenger if anyone uses that.

Well sir, you may attribute your popularity to an 11th appendage that is a toe, but I attribute mine to.....

ANYWAY. HERE COMES A REALLY BAD JOKE THAT IS NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT... sorry to have to shout..so get over it everyone.. LOL !!

1) You speak some Englsh, and propbably very well.
2) You have an education and skills.
3) You probably have all your shots and have, at some point seen a doctor.
4) You may have a "Protestant work ethic" and be willing to work, being from predominantly Protestant country and all.

So WHY would we let YOU in when we have so many other choices?

LOL JUST KIDDING~~~~~

RELAX ALL... JUST A JOKE not meant to hurt anyone. Just my twised left-handed sense of humor.
