In particular about the magazine sidebars (that horse left this barn eons prior to the recent ill-fated posting of the thread containing the "B" word and renders its flagging completely unjustified on that basis), but not so much re: the CL/ebay posts. I recently posted a link to CL for a cute little Kenmore pair and a member here followed up and is now their proud owner. Still waiting for pix of them to be posted here, by the way!

My main beef with the flagging system remains that a few sensitive types are handed the privilege of judging whether or not the content of a particular thread is suitable for MY viewing. As everyone knows by now, I find that highly objectionable.

I'll repeat that leaving Super as it is, with just some guidelines and perhaps a moderator, is all that's necessary and affords Robert the time he needs to tend to oil leaks and cranky dishwasher timers.

Aching Loss

Since the case of Austin has been mentioned, am I the only one who felt grief when the Austin debacle occurred? I sent Robert an email early in the day and requested the thread be taken down given Austin’s youth and the tenor of the posts. By nightfall I had been pilloried by a member of the vacuum club as an instigator. Nothing and I mean nothing I could say de-escalated that horrible train wreak. By nightfall horrible lies, threats and defamation lay all around us. If we didn't learn from that, I see little hope better behavior or the ability to just quietly walk away when the fresh blood is flowing.

as I didn't see the case of Austin mentioned. Forgive me if I skimmed.

What I did see, however, was Toggle's post. Allow me to refresh memories:

The only thing I'd correct (sorry Toggie) is that only certain subjects were mentioned in the request (I just checked it). Not sayin' I don't agree w/ you!

I also question trying to ban people under 18:

-If they are interested in washers, they are probably also interested in detergents, etc.
-They may well be interested in other appliances. If nothing else, other small appliances might be a good starting point. Many parents would not permit replacing the family front load Home Depot special with a vintage Maytag. Many won't allow a huge laundry room filled with vintage washers. A shelf of vintage coffee makers, on the other hand, is possible.
-I fully agree with comments made earlier that modern kids have already heard it all. I grew up pre-Internet, but I heard plenty before I was 14. If I described half of what I heard my classmates talking about when I was in 7th grade PE (roughly age 13), this post would vanish through the magic of the "Report this post" button. Probably within five minutes.
-The Internet is here to stay. The sooner teenagers learn to deal with it, good parts and not so good parts, the better.

I am so sorry you had to go through that.

The Austin incident was a watershed for us.

We split into two groups, those of us who oppose racism and those who supported kicking dark-skinned people around.

Not all of the conservative Christians here nor all of the Republicans agreed with Austin's racism and many of the more conservative members here who stood up for Robert and the rights of all humans as equal children of God were treated even more badly than were those of us who were known to be pro-human-rights prior to the incident.

You tried to be a peace maker. As you always do. Truly, I am so sorry that all came down as it did.

Would a No Politics - No Religion rule really drive away members? Seems like a very simple solution with minimal website changes and would allow the recipe sharing, estate sale finds and range/fridge/smalls discussion that draws folks together without passwords or other restrictions.

Even the most innocuous political thread eventually degenerates into finger pointing and internet shouting and as brought up above, such threads tend to polarize even those members that don't feel the need to feed the fire. Why not take it offline to begin with?

Can we all just completely get past that. Stop feeding the drama and the hurt feelings. We all have better things to do.

Also, I am as nice and polite as they come, but I also like to flirt and sometimes enjoy a "racy" post. I don't believe I am alone. I seem to remember a post with a picture of a nice man hanging laundry. It inspired many of us.

I also wouldn't have a problem with a nice lady doing the same. We should be considerate of all our members!

Yes, well done. But I will join some others in quibbling about the CL/eBay listings. I have found them helpful on occasion, because I don't really have the time to be scouring the ads. And, to use some of your own advice, if you don't want to read about a CL/eBay listing, don't open the thread ;-)...

Also, I'm going to have to check my Emily Post to see if she recommends artfully deeply offending others in a plausibly deniable way. I suspect I won't find it.

I have heard however that in Japanese culture the art of polite conversation is never to offend another if one can at all avoid it. Something we Americans find a bit hard to follow, I suspect. In my real life dealings I've found things can go a lot smoother if I just smile and nod when someone says something so obviously wrong and ill-informed that even I know the real truth of the matter. They won't appreciate being corrected and I'll get little to nothing out of educating them for free anyway...

Then there's Jeeves. His standard response to Wooster's most inane comments: "In-DEED, Sir", with that wry little incompletely suppressed smile of superiority. I'll have to try it some day.

Personally, I like seeing what's out there in Anytown, USA. Seeing what a Maytag A208 is bringing in Kansas City, VS Bridgeport CT. And a lot of times,EBay or C/L is the only way I'll see an oddball machine.
I'd rather read those post's than the ones about someone's rant, because a certain politician said or did something. Or someone's rant about something their partner (gay, straight, or indifferent)did.

Just my opinion.

I appreciate the flea-bay and Craig's lisp

postings.
It's nice for a member to let others know of something and it does give me a sense of prices and conditions.

Laundress, especially, has often shown us some great stuff...and many people do have lists circulating or officially posted asking for much of what she mentions.

Really, isn't this one of those things which fall into the category of 'if you don't like it, don't read it?'

In the last two weeks, friends here in the Rocky Mountain area have led us to a monitor top and a '50s GE stove, both very interesting, both cheap, neither what we wanted right now.

Maybe someone like me who loves thumpers is not going to drool over those buttons which light up in different colors, but there sure was someone who did...and the KA Superba we just got a while back was also only up on a small auction site for a short while.

I hope Robert keeps these tips and head's up.

How about a"Dirty Laundry" Forum?

I think another separate forum would be the way to go here. It could be called "Dirty Laundry" That way the ranter can rave all he wants. Fighting the wrongs of the world safely from behind the mighty keyboard. From the chosen location of the day,be it Germany or the USA, all injustice shall be righted.Be it homophobia, separation of church and state, something unpleasant from the distant past that has nothing to do with anything present, to racisim itself. The possiblilties would be endless.

Yes as for the "heads up" type postings I feel those are extremely important to this web site and I encourage everyone to post anything that they are not planning on acquiring.

Remember the $600 brand new, never used 1957 Kenmore 800? Had that not been posted I would never have seen that and it might had gone to the krusher!

Hi Robert-

Sorry you have to deal with this mess. I am sure whatever you decide, will be in the best interest of the club. I find it rather bizarre that a certain member, who creates alot of the animosity in this forum, has the nerve to offer suggestions.

I have had my problems with 1 or 2 members, and allowed myself to get caught up in adding to the drama. For that, I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended.
I think we all need to respect each other and embrace differences. I hope we can start off 2010 with peace and friendship.

Personally, I think some of you folks are too damned sensitive and judgmental. Some just can't see humor in things that are actually funny because everything is taken so damned seriously sometimes. But that's my opinion. I don't give a crap what people say, or how they say it, that's their own problem. But if it makes everyone's life better, why not ban the topics of politics, sex and religion, since they have no place in an open forum when they get nasty. Isure as hell won't miss any of it. If you continue to post on these topics, kick their butts out of the club. Simple solution.
