Dishwashers, how much they cost to run?

I've been using a dishwasher for 12 years, its my first and still going strong. Its a Hotpoint Df31 almond colour.

We usually use quick wash 50oc (Number 2) if its half full and when full or quite dirty we use number 4 65oc normal wash (no point in super wash as its same temperature. It has 6 programs, the last one's freshen up (like special guest rinse).

We're thinking of getting a dishwasher for our second home, not far from first home. Its going to be a hotpoint fdl570 in graphite to match fridge/freezer which is 3 years old, Hotpoint and in graphite.

I wonder how much it costs for a speed 25 wash?
and a daily 60 minute wash?
and a normal wash which lasts 1 hour 40minutes (approx)?
plus how much it costs to run eco wash which lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Someone questioned me, lol and i didn't know.

Don't know the figures but I think I saw recently on The One Show, they did lab tests to work out this very point. The result was that providing the dishwasher is fully loaded and used effectively, it is more energy efficient than washing up by hand. Am sure someone will provide the details but it confirmed for me what I always knew.

About a fortnight ago.

Hand-washing used more water; dishwasher used more energy, but taken on a like-for-like basis, fully loaded, the dishwasher won hands down for time-saving, energy usage and cleanliness.

Margot Leadbetter from 'The Good life' had the right idea: "You could save yourself a lot of time and effort if you got yourself a dishwasher."

Cost to run:

Given that the energy label cycle is around 1kWh, simply get the price of the electricity per kWh and you'll have your cost, the other cycles will be around 1,6/2 kWh for the intensive, 1,2/1,4 for standard and around 0,8 for the quick cycle.

If you pay electricity, say, 15 pence per kWh:

Eco cycle: 15 pence/kWh x 1 kWh = 15 pence
Intensive: 15 x 2 = 30 pence
Normal: 15 x 1,4 = 21 pence
Quick: 15 x 0,8 = 12 pence

Plus you add the cost of the detergent and cost of water (around 15 l per load usually) and you're done!

I hope it helped.

Anyway, as the other said, automatic dishwashing with a modern machine is far more efficient than hand dishwashing, given that the machine is full and loaded correctly, just think of how much more water you use to rinse and wash compared to the complete load in the dishwasher! And Sure you won't use cold water! So that automatically translates in more energy too.

As a rough guide.....

0.95-1.05kwh hour on the economy programme(the one the energy label is worked out on)so say 11-13p or under half that on cheap rate.

Approx 0.6-0.7kwh for a quick 30-40 deg

Between 10-15L of water- so 1-2 washing up bowl fulls

According to Bosch to wash 12 place settings THROUGHLY by hand you use twice the power and approx 60L of water.....

Bit of a no brainer id say lol !
