Pardon me if this has been discussed before. What are your favorite HE detergents and why? I have only used Arm & Hammer HE in my new Affinity so far and want to know how others have faired with different brands. I like the A&H so far.

Also has anyone found certain brands suck?

Tide

My favorite still has to be Tide Powder HE. I think maybe it's the smell for one thing, but also it's the only HE powder I've seen other than Sears brand. I've yet to try that but have heard great things about it. I may give it a shot soon.

Even though I have a TL,

I do prefer HE detergents, because (horrors!) I am not a fan of lots of suds.

I'd rather have angel food, or "German" chocolate cake or my carrot cake than sudscake.

My favourite non-enzyme HE detergent is all Small and Mighty, in the "Fresh Rain" scent.

My favourite enzyme HE detergent is the Wisk Small and Mighty.

Brand available on supermarket shelf: Tide HE Powder (I'm with Jon on this one)

BUT....

The very best cleaning/stain-removing HE detergent is powdered SA8 With Bioquest®, available online at Quixtar.com. It's spendy, but worth it. I use it only for my highly stained kitchen whites loads. It's fantastic and very low-sudsing.

My favorate

I have two that I really like well. The new SA8.It cleans well as well as being clean rinsing, once the wash is over and the rinse is started, it is out of there. It does well with my mom's TL as well. She has attributed that to the longevity of her washer. I also love the German Persil. I have always loved the smell, it also contains oxy cleaners which do well with whites, plus it gives my laundry space a nice sent. They even sell it at Starks in Beaverton, Or, just in case I run out.

gain he...

love the smell and washing power of gain he. i also pair it up with gain fabric softner.. nice smell and washes great..

bleacho~

Gain has an HE powder? I personally LOVE Fresh Start in the front load machine. Its low sudsing, smells great and even better, a great bargain at $3.99 a bottle.

Favorite HE Detergents

This is a great and informative thread and I really appreciate this one. On a slight side track, I recently exchanged emails with Unilever regarding the availability of Wisk Powder. According to the representative's reply, Unilever has discontinued production of the powdered Wisk due to lack of a good market for it.--Laundry Shark

Re He Detergent

I like the Purex purclean. its low suds and works well in my FT
I also like the Fab liquid that I find at Wall Mart it too is low sudsing and smells great just like the Purex. I also like the Surf powder works well on whites and smells nice. I do use regular Tide in my machine but cut it back to do a good job in the machine with out too much suds.

Persil (all products), though expensive, and Wisk HE

I'm experimenting with all things "all"...liquids and powder

I also really like Sears HE liquid with softener, because I'm advised that it has low optical brighteners, and it's good for colors, and very inexpensive.

Is that a rotary ironer I see on top of those Maytags? As a child with 6 of us in the house, my Mum had a Bendix rotary iron as she had 12 bed sheets a week on top of mountains of school uniforms and endless other laundry (all washed in a Hoover twin tub!). She swore by her rotary iron and was gutted when it finally packed in. Have my eye on a steam press but no room for it until we move house.

On the subject of detergent, I have recently switched to Persil Small and Mighty but had a box of Ariel in the cupboard which I haven't used for weeks now. I used some on Saturday on a load of really dirty whites and I have to say that despite the good things I have to say about small and mighty, I am going back to Ariel on whites as I think it is superior in every way. I do like the colour small and mighty so will continue with that. Have tried the Surf 'Sunshine' S & M but the fragrance is very cloying and almost sickly sweet so another I will palm off on someone else!

I know this isn't an HE Detergent, but I started using Ariel Oxy Azul that I buy in the Spanish grocery store near my house. I have never had such good results from a laundry detergent. It's not a high sudsing detergent, but it does make some suds, so dosing has to be done carefully. I use 1/4 cup in the Calypso to a 1/2 cup for severe dirt in a large or full load.

This morning, I washed a load of whites and I threw in heavily soiled dishtowels and the towels I use to wash the cars. I put it on the Whitest Whites cycle with Saturated Soak, with 1/2 cup Ariel, 1/4 cup Clorox 2 and 3/4 cup of bleach which is dispensed into the first rinse. I was utterly amazed when the machine finished and I took the car towels out....they were completely and totally clean. Not a single spot left on them. Normally, car towels don't come totally clean, but these did....even old soils that had been there for a while were gone. The stuff is amazing. It doesn't suds too much if you're careful with the amount you use...remember, you can always add a little if you need it. Ariel never ceases to amaze me.
