Sadly, the day I finally installed my countertops on my dream vintage kitchen my 1980 Touchmatic Amana Radarange had an accident. Someone either left a piece of metal in it (looks like a coin because the burn spot is perfectly round) or it just melted through. It works perfect but there is a burn spot on the bottom where the door shuts and a corresponding melted spot on the lower door where the plastic is melted. There is also a crack in the plastic on the door.

It is free to anyone here who could use the spare parts or repair it. I just want to keep the glass tray in case I find a new one that needs one.
It's beautiful on the outside and I just didn't want to put it on the curb or in the dump. Please, someone take it from me. I live in the Detroit, Ann Arbor, MI and Toledo, OH area. I don't remember the model # (it's too heavy for me to lift) but I do know it was made in 1980, is a "Touchmatic" (not Touchmatic II).

Oh, and if anyone has a Radarange they can part with, I'm in the market. I'd actually prefer the ones with the dials but the touchmatics are o.k., too. I like the chromey ones.
Thanks so much

Hi Mom11, that door liner burn-through is a real problem these days and there's not much that can be done short of swapping the door which is a very involved process. Your best bet is to keep an eye on craigslist and wait for the right one to pop up.

If you don't get any takers on your machine, hit me up through the messaging system; I could always use the control panel. -Cory

Please take it Cory!

I enjoy my vintage appliances but I have very limited skill in repairing them. A microwave in just too scary to me. I don't know how the private message service works. Is there a list with emails?

Oh, Ovrphil, I have been contacting that seller the last few days and have not heard back yet. That is exactly the RR I am looking for. I'd be pleased as punch to get that. Only about an hour from me. I never know what to do when sellers don't respond to emails. Wonder if it sold? Not sure if the ad is still up.
I wouldn't quibble with the price on that either. Well worth it. I guess I'll just keep trying.

Thanks, guys. :)

Mom11 - my take

I have found - sometimes, the response is slow - I've had to wait five days in one stretch, to hear from them.

It might be sold, sure. On some rare occasions, they don't reply and the add is there for a month! You know what I love to do? If they won't reply, I flag it because if it's sold, what's the consequence of flagging it? Also if they're collecting emails/contact info, as is known to be happening, then flagging is right up there with a good cup of Joe to get your day started.

Well, good luck anyways.

Phil

Cory does "door liner burn thru" mean a foreign object or something that happens with time? Thanks Arthur

Arthur, it appears to be a random event that turns into a chain reaction. Behind the plastic liner, the door choke is made of a series of metal 'fingers'. And much like a metal fork, these fingers can act like an antenna under certain circumstances. The high frequency MW energy is attracted, begins resonating, and next thing you know you have a continuous arcing event that melts through the plastic. I have yet to come up with a good explanation of why this can suddenly happen to a perfectly good, mechanically sound, machine. -C

Cory Thank You, for the explanation. There is something new to learn around here everyday. Arthur
