Good Ironing board

Hi, need some help finding a "good" ironing board. The chepo I have got bent when I moved and I want a good sturdy one. I do not want one of the wide ones with the iron rest. I had one of those and did not like it. I like to use the square end of the regular size ironing board to press shirts and the poiny end slides way into pants so you can press the waist area all the way down to mid thigh then when you flip the pants around to press the legs you don't have to press as far up and its easier for me not to mess up the crease that way. You can not do that on one of the wide ones.

Everyone I look at is either cheap and flimsy or its wide and sturdy with a iron rest. Anybody know of any secret sources for a good old fashioned ironing board?

Hi Andy. Get either a Polder or Rowenta. They are both very sturdy.

Look around at

rummage sales, estate sales, or places like Goodwill.

HOWEVER, do NOT get a wooden ironing board (they are out there.)
Wooden ironing boards are fire hazards.

Both of my grandmothers, my mom, and now me have all used wooden ironing boards without any problems. One just needs to careful, just like anything else. My Grandma Baumann, my mom, and I all had or have built-in boards that fold up into the wall. And my Grandma Wilde had the same ironing board from the time she got married in 1932, until she moved into assisted living in 1995.

Not everyone

is as conscientious as your dear ladies. There are always exceptions to everything.

I was just making a strong suggestion. For example, most modern irons, for their various shortcomings do have automatic off for safety's sake.

I love my wood ironing board! I hate the squeaky flimsy metal boards (especially the ones that have a wire mesh top). The only thing I don't like is that they're just a little too short. I think they're geared towards housewives, who apparently tend to be a little bit shorter than me. Same problem with treadle sewing machines.

Check your local thrift stores. I did and found a wonderful Mary Proctor board from the 60's that has both a small wide "wing" that you can fold up for wider bodied shirts and the front end also opens up so you can do sheets.
There's a place in MA. that still makes covers for these older boards.

I didn't mean to offend or criticize you, if I did, I apologize. I only meant that from a durability standpoint, wood is better.

as rhonic says...

if you can get Sunbeam ironing boards - go that way... We bought the 'Couture' model a little while back and love it... Mind you - we don't do the ironing either - but the cleaner has no problems with it... Plenty big enough to do slacks without having to shuffle them around - nice and strong and not at all 'wobbly' on carpet...

I would say to look at thrift stores and such, I have a very sturdy Proctor ironing board I bought from a flea market for $4
