Yeah, a lot of these things are more complicated than they appear. Yet again I commence to miss my grandfather. He was a chemist and had a real gift for explaining things in a way anyone could understand.
Another example: Years ago my brother-in-law got a job in a paper mill. One thing he was surprised to learn was that "all natural", brown, unbleached paper plates actually had a larger carbon footprint and consumed more resources than conventional white paper plates. I forget how/why that's the case, sorry.
