Too bad your grand dad isn't around, to talk to about these things!
I do know that since WWII over 80000 chemicals have been introduced to the average home..that were not there before the war.
This includes not only our cleaning and laundry products, but also personal care products.
After learning this, I gave it some thought, and decided to try to do my cleaning with what would have been "under the sink" in the early 1940s
Real Soap (not detergent) Bar form and liquid castile.

Barkeepers Friend. (Works great on brass, and rust, even rust on fabric)
Vinegar (full strength in a spray bottle)
Just with those 5 items, you'd be surprised what you can get clean.
To me, a little Clorox in the toilet is a necessity. And since it was around then...
 
Can recommend Astonish products too though the laundry detergent is only non bio so would need a booster for stains otherwise good.
