Help! GE Dishwasher Won't Drain

Waaaahhhhh! My 6 month old GE PDW 8200 dishwasher quit draining completely this week. It leaves lots of water standing in the tub.

I pulled it out and checked the hoses and the pump for clogging and also checked the pump operationally, and it's fine. It seems there is something keeping water from getting to the pump during the drain cycle. Can any of you tell me where to look next? This is the Profile model, not the one with the filter in the rear. Before this happened, it worked flawlessly.

Did the hose out of the machine kink where it goes into the drain/dishwasher? If there's too much slack in that hose it can pull down on the coupling and kink. We had a house where we had to prop a tuna can (!) under the hose to support it where it went into the disposer.

Nope, no kink in the hose....Would call service but I bought the machine new from a builder whose client decided to go for an appliance upgrade in her kitchen at the last minute. I don't think the warranty is transferable. I bought it for hudreds less than the MSRP, so I knew I was taking a chance.

I once saw a dishwasher that wouldn't drain and it turned out to be the opening into the disposal where the hose connects that was plugged with food debris. Once it was cleared, everything worked fine.

Do you hear the pump come on when it is supposed to be draining?

Yes, I've even watched the pump as it came on. It's fine, and there's no restriction in the outlet drain hose, all the way to, and including the disposer. There's got to be a check valve in the sump or something, like the GE's with the filter in the rear. I could figure those out, but not sure with this one.

There is a check valve on the discharge side of the drain pump. Check that first, and also the sump beneath the filter screen. I have seen plastic wrap cover the outlet and not let water through.

I've had to clear pieces of plastic from below the sump in my GE Profile. It's a tight fit for a big hand but it is easy to do. The check valve on the pump could be the culprit...it prevents backflow into the dishwasher from the sink drain and it could well be stuck. The drain pump is easy to remove to check.

Well whaddya know...There ARE two check valves on my machine. One is on the outlet of the pump and had a toothpick stuck in it. The other is just "downstream" of the sump and it was stuck with a small pebble. I have no idea where this debris came from, as I always use a rubber spatula to scrape off dishes before I put them in. (I never pre-rinse) At any rate, removing these two items and giving everything a thourough cleaning while I had it all apart, took care of the problem. I suspect they actually originated while the dishwasher sat in a house during construction.

Had a toothpick stuck in it!

That happened to a KA years ago....would not hold water. It was expensive to call a repairman in just to remove the 'toothpick' from the pump area.
Guess what? Another toothpick never entered that machine again. Maybe that is why I still 'pre-rinse'(ducks and runs)

weird noise on drain motor

My GE Profile will go through it's wash cycle, but when it drains a motor makes a loud pump noise but no water drains. Any help?

Sounds like you may have a similar problem. It involves pulling the dishwasher out, removing the drain hose, and checking the pump which is located on the bottom rear. There is an orange rubber flapper valve on the output of the pump. Lift it up and see if you can see anything stuck in it.

Unbelievable! After days of running normally, now it won't fill right. Sheesh! During the fill cycle, there is just a small trickle of water entering the tub, even though the tap is full open. Mayhaps I have purchased a lemon. Oh well, tomorrow I'll pull it out again and check the water inlet solenoid and valve.
