Hoover twin tub washer with a strange smell

I everyone. I just did a few loads of wash in my Hoover twin tub that resides under the counter in the kitchen. When I have used it, not very often, I have noticed a sort of moldy smell?
I have a question: Is it ok to do put some hot water in it with bleach and let it run its cycle? I could fill up the spin tub too and do the same?
Is this a good idea or not? I always, like now, keep the lids open to completely dry out before I store things away for another time.
Would the bleach idea work or just live with it? Thanks for your input and as usual, happy washing. Gary

Ew, I know the smell you are talking about. One of mine has that, I think it may be due from when it sit's for a long period's and that smell absorbs into the plastic from some water and build up in the various pump hoses. Is your's a plastic or SS Tub?

I generally found regular hot washing with a good fragrant detergent usually eradicates this smell. But if it's not used once a week or so, it quickly builds back up.

But your suggestion to let it sit with hot water cannot do it any harm.I would use a good fragrant powder (just my choice), also I personally wouldn't fill the spinner up just from the load on the motor that will be required pumping it all out (Just to preserve the motor), but that's entirely up to you.

I have no answer regarding the bleach, but I would like to know as well. We recently acquired a TT that had a smell when we got it. This one had been used somewhat recently, and still had soapy water left in the pump - which has got to be a big no-no.

I think somehow this machine was left sitting for some time with water in it and the door closed, because I see what looks like mildew stains around the top of the tub. I ran fresh water through it until the water ran clear. Then I put very hot water in and ran that through til I was sure the very hot water reached the pump, then I left it sit overnight and drained it in the morning. Later we took it outside to sit in the sunshine all day to air out. Seems to be considerably better now.

Being a large fan of Hoover twinnies myself and having owned several .... I'm pretty confident that filling your cloths washing machine with water and bleach is perfectly fine. In fact ... it's recommended. It is after all a washing machine ... not a dry cleaning machine.

One other thing you might want to check is to see if something went over the spin can and is sitting in the bottom of the spin tub. When I got my twin tub a few years ago, while checking it out, I pushed the spin can from side to side, and found an old sock sitting in the bottom of the tub. I can't remember how I got it out... I think a bit of disassembly was required, or I used a long flat screwdriver/pry-bar to fish it out.

sometimes you will have better results with sprays like bathroom or kitchen cleaner with bleach, or a mold/mildew remover....

these are more to the task of removing stains and mildew issues than plain bleach...some are specific for deep root issues

may be a bit difficult, but you want to get all inside that spin can area, and up under the rim...spray, soak, and then rinse...some scrubbing may help too!

works wonders for HE machines with those issues....

worst case is to use a heavy dose of chlorine powder, like what is used for pools
