When I lived in the Boston area in 2006, I had a 1998 1300 s.f. two story and in the winter, mice ate through the coils of the CA unit when nesting. I wasn't happy with that in the Spring.
I decided to go the route of a window AC thinking 'at least THAT room would be kept cool'
I put the cheapo 5000 btu AC in an upstairs office/bedroom window. Remember, cool air falls. And if you keep the shades shut on South facing windows, you can really conserve temperature. It kept not only that room cool, but the cool air fell to the first level as well.
It was interesting in that it felt comfy in the house on a 90 degree day, but if you went into the unfinished basement, it was actually warmer and clammy. When you have CA with the furnace in the basement, that's where it gets the coldest.
I had a friend over on a 90 degree humid day, and warned that the only AC I had, was the one upstairs. As soon as you walked in the front door it was noticable how much cooler it was. "That's the only AC you have on?" He said.
Again, bigger (btu, expense, wattage useage, noise level) is not better.
The mini split systems are supposed to be really good. I've considered going that route.
Here's my AC installed and keeping me comfy on this 90 degree Sunday.
I bought this one year old, analog controls (originally) LG unit last summer for $30. It was like brand new.
A Zenith 6500 Btu unit with electronic timer I had got for free, was in need of freon so it was time to get rid of it. I kept the timer and sloppily melded it with the LG. It's the first electronic timer model I've had. I really like how it works compared to the analog controls.
