I just couldn't help myself - I got up the guts to plug in the GE washer/dryer combo on Saturday afternoon just to see what happened!
No sparks, no flames, no "zzzzt-fizz-crackle" sounds...
The motor kicked in the tub turned smoothly!! I manually advanced the timer and I could hear the water inlet solenoids kick in and I made the drain solenoid engage!!

BUT.....

I am not getting power to the timer motor (what the???) and I could not seem to make the spin solenoid kick in...
Theory 1: Methinks my wiring may be the problem - the missing part of my wiring diagram was about these two connections...
BUT... my wiring diagram is on the way (thanks Gyrafoam!!) and I hope I will be able to figure this out.
Theory 2: Because I know the dryer thermostat is not going to work without the thermal probe wire, I simply didn't hook up the connections to and from the thermostat (to the relay, elements, and timer). Well, that and not having the complete diagram. I think I may have convinced the machine that it is running in the dry cycle, which to the best of my understanding, will stop the timer... BUT... the wiring diagram should confirm that.
Not knowing anything about how this type of machine works, I am always anxious to hear from anyone who owns one!!

I am so happy for you that the machine is running. You'll figure out the flaws from the other gentlemen in the club. How wondeful is that you had no "Pops, sizzles or burnt wires". You'll do well my friend. Isn't learning such a tremendous part of our lives ? Especially when it comes to saving out beautiful metal beasts ???? When design and engineering was part of the American Heritage ??? Now it all comes from elswhere and I'm embaressed.

Eddie, you can't imagine what a great learning process this has been for me. I am now on a mission to save whatever I can! I have acquired a reputation at the company where I do the 'real' work and I've already done a number of repairs for people on older appliances.
I sometimes catch myself thinking, "wouldn't it be great to relaunch an appliance manufacturing operation"... You know, stuff that was actually made to work and last?? Sigh....
