Little know factoid: Both his father and grandfather were militant aetheists!

and all that, still I am hard pressed to think of anyone who did more to hurt women and gays, democracy and Johannian Christianity in the US than this man.
Just as the Holy Roman Empire was none of the above, so is the "Moral Majority" neither moral nor representative of the majority.
If there is such a place as the heaven this man preached, then it would be interesting to see him explaining his attitude towards Jews to one who really made it big: Jesus...and that is just for starters...

I won't say I'm happy his passing, but I can't help but feel a grim satisfaction. And I can't help but think about all the people that I know, both living and dead, who were personally affected by his hateful interpretation of Christian scripture.

He was a charlatan, a thief, a racist, a homophobe, and a religious fraud. Just an all-around jerk. Of course, we'll be subject to a week or so of crocodile tears by people who want to kiss up to his followers, but at least that will be the end of him.

I celebrated tonight........

We had some good friends over for dinner to celebrate the end of Falwell's tyranny against the Gay & Lesbian community. This man was the epitome of intolerance and hatred. To see the news media glorify him as a good man is sickening. I say good riddance!!

I should feel bad about somebody that has passed away.I don't not for him I know this is awful but he has caused me nothing but Pain in my life.That poison he spits out that the gays are the cause of Everything and My Family being such devout Chirstians wants me to go to LOVE in ACTION so they can fix me cause I am the essence of evil and the reason 9/11 happened and all thoese people died becaused I (((CHOOSE))) to be gay.THAT one man has caused me so much pain and I have never met him and I am HAPPY that he can't hurt people anymore..

I never really paid much attention to Jerry, yes I knew of his stance on gays and abortion and such, but never really gave him a second thought.
I'd put him in the same class as Pat Robertson, Jim Bakker, and even the esteemed Ted Haggard.

Reading this thread this morning though I remember words from one of my college professors. Those words were: "Remember Satan has many faces, even that of a pastor"

Why now, why not 50 years ago?

I'm a straigt Jewish guy, and I am hard-pressed to think of a person who was the cause of as much hatred and hurt to so many people over such a long time as Jerry Fallwell. The fact that he did these terrible things in the name of God was even more disturbing. He took advantage of so many otherwise good people and turned them against so many good people, not because of anything those people did, but because of pure hate. I think people like Jerry Fallwell are both evil and dangerous because they do so little to help the world and so much more to harm it. Besides, although I am Jewish, I thought Christianity had something to do with loving people, not hating them.

Just because someone is now dead, it doesn't magically make their life any better. Jerry Fallwell is dead, in life he was a hate-monger, his being dead does not change that.
