Just got a 1976ish McGraw Edison Speed Queen washer yesterday from new neighbor who bought house from a little elderly couple. It is in near mint condition and is built with very high quality materials. It works flawlessly also!

Woah yeah - dream machine there! Congrats on the super cool find, and from the looks of it, is also in very good shape.

This is my favorite reversing-motor control panel. Had the matching dryer once in Avocado. The dial to the left of the timer is a soak timer, and the red light indicates overflow wash/rinse, plus this is a variable water level model to boot.

SQ's don't come much cooler than this one.

(thanks for the scan Greg!)

Thanks guys!I saw it in front of neighbors garage with the boxes for the new LG set he bought and I waited (with baited breath and fingers and toes crossed) for him to come home from work to ask him if I could have the SQ.There is not a scratch on the thing and it shines like new!A very anticipatory afternoon indeed! Now if I could find a Frigidaire with an up and down action agitator and the glass window in the lid..............! (preferably the reddish color or avocado)

Awesome Find!

Hey do you know if the couple had the matching dryer to go with this classic washer? TOL model! Never seen one with the soak timer or overflow light on the panel in addition to the panel light! I had the next years model. I didn't have the soak timer, the overflow light, or the panel light but the timer dial was back lit when the machine was on. It also had the infinite water control and the same wash/rinse temperatures and action. Bet those new neighbors hadn't a clue about what they gave up! Nice!

forgot a question.....

Forgot to ask you in my last message if you did get the fabric softener dispenser which sits on top of the agitator? My guess is no, since I see a Downy Ball sitting off to the side on the machine!

Where's Eddy1210? He'd be envious of this machine as well and he has a quite a few classic SQ's in his collection!

He did indeed have the dryer, however that was thrown out when I was out of town and was not here to rescue it.That was a gas model he told me.He said it would not heat and had a hole in the lint screen and a threadbare belt.Still a bummer as I would surely have been able to find parts eventually..............He said he didn't want the old SQ washer because he thought it was an eyesore in his modern finished basement so he got the new LG front loaders. In my opinion newer is almost never better...just more expensive. We have a newer Whirly cabrio too and I don't like that nearly as much as my SQ!

SQ SOLID TUB WASHER

Yours is the exact model my first partners mother had in Wisconsin. She also had the matching electric dryer both were coppertone in color. We replaced both with new almond WPs around 1988 when we had the heat converted from fuel oil to natural gas and the gas co. said they would install the gas to the house free if we added three gas appliances. The SQ washer worked well as far as I know, it did have a new water pump at some point ,but his mother really loved the new WP gas dryer. She couldn't believe how fast it dried compared to the electric SQ. Unfortunately I didn't save the brown SQs I sold both to some local folks for around $150, it was the last one of these SQs I ever saw with the soak timer.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can see myself as a kid in the basement of our apartment building turning the agitators on the SQ commercial machines back and forth. Take a picture of this TREASURE and send it in to ALLIANCE, they would love it......Again great find, congrats and enjoy.

Super Duper Sweet........also rare is the larger tub.....I only got to see one a long time ago....and that one had the banging solenoids

WOW! A large solid tub machine. How cool is that? And it even lights up! Congrats!

The agitator design that Speed Queen used really stood the test of time.  This same design was also used in their wringer machines, and is very effective.  Dirt doesn't stand a chance! lol  Congrats on a SWEET score!!!

I'm guessing.......

that is a bleach dispenser in the front left corner, correct? It's neat that it has a cap on it as well. Is it a hinged plastic cap? Wow, this model has everything your heart would desire and then some!

I had to come back for another look

76SpeedQueen,  i  hope you get your fabric soft.  dispenser, but it blocks the view of so much of the fun.  So if you want , try to get a chrome agitator cap too.   I am envious, I cannot find a solid tub SQ to save my life.  How long have the solid tubs been out of production, must be about 35 years?

Commercial

I made contact with a local SQ Coin op dealer a while back and they claimed they had a warehouse full of solid tub coin-ops.  Unfortunately, I never made to their center.  But a coinop might be a good substitute for one of these domestic beauties.

Yes, it is a plastic hinged cap bleach dispenser!

I am looking to aquire a fabric softener dispenser and would like to have the metal agitator cap also.If anyone has any leads on these Items I would be interested in them...

Speed Queen vs. LG

Wanna bet that the SQ washer you aquired will be running problem free vs. the LG front loader it's previous owner just bought? I'll betcha that in five years the SQ will still be running, and the LG will be on it's way to the landfill.
