Would you say this advert is implying that Ariel UK pods, do actually contain bleaching agents?

I'm assuming...

That the new Persil ones do contain bleaching agents too, as they're only sold in Bio and Non Bio version ps (colour care version is just still liqui-tabs). So. This would make sense.

Ariel pods and UK Persil Dual Action Capsules don't contain bleaching agents. You can check the ingredients on the corresponding site.

In February 2015 Henkel introduced new Persil power-mix caps with oxygen bleach in the powder compartment. Great product. The first capsules I really like.

Strange

They sort of imply that bleaching agents are used but are foggy about it all, and then mentioning "bleachable stains" really throws the baby out with the bath water.

Whilst I don't use either of these products I do watch there developments along the way.

It just makes me think same old product re-packaged.........................

Disappointed :-(

The UK Ariel tabs only contain optical brighteners as far as I'm aware its impossible to put oxygen bleach into liquids or tabs because it would sink to the bottom and be ineffective. I have used them but they are nothing special to be honest! Low sudsing though so that's a plus point in my book.

It's not strictly true. Oxygen bleach in the form of hydrogen peroxide can be used in a liquid detergent , I'm pretty sure Wisk in the UK had hydrogen peroxide in when it came out and there are some liquids available in the U.S. with "oxy action" .

Oxi-Action

You want to be careful when choosing laundry products with such claims. Usually the "oxi" is nothing to do with hydrogen peroxide (oxygen bleach) but heavy doses of whitening agents, surfactants, enzymes and or other substances to give in theory the same results as using bleach.

No, you cannot in general combine liquid detergents and liquid oxygen bleach (hydrogen peroxide). The latter is very unstable and more to the point will kill any enzymes contained in product. Powdered detergents get round this by having the bleach and or enzymes encapsulated or coated to keep them from harming each other.

Leaving aside Vanish, Napisan and several other liquid hydrogen peroxide bleaches I'd make very sure any detergent with "oxi" on the label does indeed contain oxygen bleaching agents.

I am quite interested by those Henkel pods which appear to be genuine combinations of liquid and powder. The issue (as always with pre-measured stuff) is that if you do need to wash anything less than a dirty 5kg the darned things will over foam, causing issues for the machine and the washing process. That's if they don't just lodge themselves in the door seal..........however, all credit to Henkel, I really think they do `pioneering' well.

Good call Aquacycle, the Ecover bleach is great (to be fair, `essential') stuff for us `liquid fans'. Also great (and way cheaper still) is Oxy Plus from Astonish, which I use bucket loads of.

I so wish I could just use a bio powder, but (for my family's washing) not a single one of them deals with as large a range of stains as premium liquid + powdered oxy bleach. To each their own......

Happy laundering.....

To each their own......

Hi Nick,

Absolutely agree! I've never got on with liquid detergents to be honest. I've never found one that washes as well as a powder and they always seem more expensive. But as you said, to each their own. Everyone has different laundry needs, so no one detergent will suit everyone. If it did, there would only be one detergent, there'd be no market and we wouldn't have much to talk about lol.
