Maytag A606 Leaking Again :(

I was hoping someone here might be able to offer some very explicit directions for fixing a leak in my Maytag A606 (used to be my mom's, and has washed millions of loads!).

I think, from the research I've done, it is probably related to a tub seal leak...you know, something under that metal band I'm seeing. (I removed the two screws at the bottom and popped off the front and looked at the machine on the inside and the area around that seal was a bit wet.)

Unfortunately, I start the washing machine, and as she's filling up, water starts running out the bottom. It is a leak which has progressively worsened over time.

Is there someone here who is familiar enough with these great machines to walk me through a possible repair of the leaking problem? I'm relatively handy. For a girl.

Are you talking about the center tub seal located beneath the outer tub, above the transmission? If so, that requires removal of the agitator, top tub shroud and seal, and inner tub. You will then see the stem & seal. That is what is leaking. There is a special spanner wrench made to remove the nut that holds the inner tub to that assembly, and then another nut (left hand threads) to remove that seal assembly and boot seal beneath it. I'm an appliance tech and I think it's alot of work to replace. Sometimes the agitator freezes on to the tranny shaft, and you may have to break the agitator to get it off. Just my 2 cents.

Actually, I think it COULD be that but I can't tell by what I looked at

What I was referring to when I said "tub" was that big tub I see when I remove the front panel. That great big tub sitting right in front of me. It has a metal band around it holding two pieces together (I assume). At that juncture is a little bit of water, and I'm wondering if that is where the leak happens.

I should also mention that it doesn't leak with EVERY load, only sometimes (though more and more lately). Sometimes it's a LOT of water on the floor, and sometimes there's absolutely none at all.

I removed the front panel again and it appears that I do have (at least) the same problem as this gentleman had with his Maytag. I would like to repair this leak if I can, but as he expressed in his post, I don't know what to call the parts I need to order.

Does anyone know how to refer to the kit in question? And also, does anyone know where (online perhaps?) I might be able to purchase parts for a Maytag A606 this old?

Darn! That part doesn't fit the A606

I was hoping I'd be able to follow the instructions contained in that link and to use the part which the gentleman kindly supplied the number of, but when I looked on the "parts store" website, the A606 is not listed as being compatible with this part.

Does anyone have information specific to the Maytag A606?

Julia,if you're sure your Maytag is leaking from the same place as the one in the other thread,the same part will fix it.Be sure that's where the leak is from,though.
Maytag used that assembly for many years. Feel free to ask any more questions.

check also the band at the top of tub that holds the tub ring
my 806s leaked at the band and I had to loosen the ring and reset it

this is one of the screws that holds the band tight to the tub ring

check to see if the tub ring leaks during the spin

It's only very slightly wet there. When I allowed the washing machine to fill while watching it inside with a flashlight, I saw dripping and followed it to that area with the clamps/hose/thing that the gentleman in the link fixed.

Oddly enough, there is a little thingamajig on the right hand side on the floor of the machine...I suppose it contains some electrical elements or something, perhaps. It has a white-ish plastic cover on it. In the diagram I have, it is called a "reversible self-cleaning poly pump". Fancy name.

Anyway, that thing has a little tiny bit of water pooled in a small area on top of the plastic, and I'm not really certain where that water came from...how that piece way over there got wet.

So there could also be other sources of water leaks, I suppose...particularly after all these years and all these loads of laundry!

I would really like to fix it.

Thank you for letting me know that the kit in the link is the one for me to buy. Do you know if everything I need will be in that kit? I ask because I want to be adequately prepared once I open the thing up and start taking things apart!

I have a two-year-old with lots of laundry to do!

I just re-read someone else's post, and I think my problem is simply that little cone thing...the $8 part he mentions here:

"There is a rubber piece that goes over the jet spray that is a cone shaped plastic piece which guides the incoming fill spray into the tub.this piece wares out from water presure and needs to be replaced usualy every 5 years.It is available at any Maytag parts distributer or service center and runs about $8."

Should I just try to find that small piece, or should I attempt to replace the entire assembly?

Not too odd,that's the pump,runs off a belt from the motor,nothing electrical involved.Shouldn't be any moisture there.Fix the first problem,then wipe off the pump thoroughly,and run a few cycles to see if the pump is indeed leaking.
If you're not familiar with taking one of those fill assemblys apart,I would change the whole thing.

I ordered the Water Injector Kit...one more question, please

I just ordered the Water Injector Kit (part # 204660).

Could you please tell me whether I need to remove those two clamps in the picture? It wouldn't seem necessary, but I noticed that the other gentleman did so. I remain confused about this one point.

Also, could you please tell me whether EVERYTHING I will need to complete the repair (other than tools!) is in that kit? I need to be prepared prior to starting the project, and would very much like to have everything I'll need right on hand.

You might want to check the hose that connects from the right side bottom of the tub to the pump. It may be leaking water down that hose and pooling on the indentations of the pump.The hose may be brittle and not clamped tight on the tub outlet. If the injector is leaking, you would see wet spots on the left side on the baseplate. Hope this helps!

Just feel free to keep asking questions. And don't worry if we tend to drift in and off topic.
I am not a Maytag expert (and our winter storms make me kinda of an on again and off again logger right at the moment) but I, too, have had that funny water-where-none-should-be problem.
Turned out that the hose going to the pump had pulled just a bit loose over the decades...I tightened it up (otherwise in good condition) at both ends and the water went away. Still don't quite know how it ended up THERE, but that's where it was.
One thing you might want to check, it afflicted a friend's Maytag for some time: They really need to be very much level and on a solid floor. If they aren't, water filling the tub can be diverted over the edge (yes, I know that sounds like way out of level, but it truly doesn't take as much as one would think for just a bit to spray over the edge).
