Maytag DG 906 craigslist find!

Craigslist has been pretty good this summer, I first found a clean Frigidaire control tower dryer that I passed on to a member here, then today I picked up the Maytag DG 906 pictured! The photo is where it was when I got it, just some dust on the top and grime on the cabinet. Real nice and clean rustfree machine! Does anyone know the year of this model? It works good but is there anything I should check before putting into regular use? Hopefully some day soon I will find the washer..

These models of Maytag always amuse me.....For some reason, they look like they're blind! (OK, I know, I'm weird.)

Thanks Steve! Here's the serial number: 771284MY. I cleaned the dryer inside and out and replaced the bulb and starter. Have decided not to put it into use yet though, I found that it uses a regular pilot light instead of an igniter, and want to check the gas valve for leaks before putting it into everyday service.

That there is one of my dream machines! I always wanted to pair a 68 A806 with that DG906(sort of like Granny's pair on the Beverly Hillbillies, but newer). I've always loved the little blue flame on the panel and this generation of Maytags was primo. Did these halo-of-heat dryers dry well? They always seemed to be towards the bottom of the CU reports.

Very nice dryer - must not have been used much or they kept the gas turned off except when using it. Normally, the standing pilot corrodes everything inside the machine.

Maytag DG906 Dryer

That machine is just beautiful i would love to have a pair of those i just don`t know why but i never come across those machines. I have see lots of older maytags around but not that model. Does anybody know how long they made those for ?? Were they prone to promblems ?? Is that why they were short lived ? You are so correct about the standing pilot most of the dryers i come across are all full of rust and corrosion i turn off my gas pilot, the pilot burn`s about $12.00 a month extra of gas on my bill so off it goes Still an awesome machine !!

I had a similar vintage model, I think. Mine had the knob in the middle that was entirely automatic--no buttons--and had a very clean look. Just turn the knob to "permanent press" or whatever, push the knob and walk away. I loved the simplicity of that machine. I bought it used back in 1990 when I moved into a place that didn't have 240 for the similar vintage (maybe older) Maytag electric dryer I had. There was no contest between the two dryers. The gas one dried a load of towels in half the time the electric one took. And of course it was way cheaper to operate. The only reason I got rid of it was because it started to make this horrible screeching sound and then the drum just froze up. I'd still have this dryer around if the problem was an easy fix, but it didn't appear that it was. So I dumped it and gave away the harvest gold washer that was originally paired with the gold electric dryer. Even though those tubs were small, I'd be happy with both machines if they were still working for me today. I have no complaints about the performance of that gas dryer at all. Great find!
