" the exterior of the drum and interior of the outer tub is likely coasted with the same smutz"
That thought did occur to me Dadoes, so I filled the tub with a heavy solution of Limeaway and water and added 2 gallons of additional water after the machine stopped filling. I let it run on a combination stain, soak and heavy cycle. Then when it was about to drain, I stopped the machine and let it soak for a few hours. Came back, opened the door, then rotated the drum so that a new section was under the cleaning solution. I then scrubbed the entire interior down with a short bristle brush. Restarted the machine and did it again. Finally, I let the machine soak overnight. This was all after I had already done the same with a quantity of bleach the night before.
But all that was in vein as I suspect it needs a new rear bearing. It's loud, and probably should be replaced regardless for good measure. I see the kits are about $45. Now that I worked on that Filter-Flo tub seal. I'm fairly confident I should be able to do this repair as well.
