All because of the Magiclean filter--if I've got the rig
Weird how the guy on the far left looks like Charlie Scheen while the guy on the far right looks even more like the young version of the actor who plays Jack's boss on 30Rock.
I want to learn the Whirlpool chronology, what each year's machine looks like, which years the look was pretty much unchanged, etc. This one looks like the copper version of the machine in the current WP thread.

WP had some great ads around this time, I think my other all time favorite ad was the women holding a wad of lint that she had removed from her washers lint filter. The caption read [ maybe your automatic washer isn't automatic enough ] the look on her face was worth a million bucks. This was an ad for WPs Magic Clean self-cleaning lint filter, easily the best lint filter of any kind ever used on an automatic washer.

those magic clean filters were okay until they clogged the sink drain and it overflowed onto the floor! We had to put in a lint filter in the sink.

My vote for the best self cleaning lint filter is by the com
Actually I prefer the original self-cleaning lint filter in the '47 - '49 GE washers. The screen goes around the entire circumference of the wash basket and since the basket indexes slightly during agitation the lint is evenly spread out around the entire basket screen. Then when its flushed away, its done not in one clump but in lots of small pieces and these small pieces go down any drain without clogging issues.

It IS a good ad, but my all time favourite

I've got a few other manuals like this for washers & dryers (OK, maybe it's a COUPLE! --One is a Model Guide (for a fairly top-of-the-line, which even has controls outside of the timer dial for speed & another is a comprehensive guide on INSTALLING washers & dryers, too...) One for dishwashers (maybe TWO: Port. & Built-In) & one for Electric Ranges...
I should have bought the one which shows the workings of the elec./gas dryer set up as a tanning salon and a "still"... I had to pass up the one for the Trashmaster ® trash compactor, too... Wish I'd just have had the money to...

they should have all been standing there in their underwear....that is the point of the ad!....and maybe attempting to pull them off......this ad is cute, but could have been more arousing...

Martin, the original GE, unlike the HP rim filter, was a solid tub machine so the water was thrown over the top of the wash tub into the outer tub carrying the lint permanently away and linty water did not slop over the top of the tub back onto the laundry during drain like when perforated tub washers do a spin drain.
Imagine if this shot had been set up like the ad for the Norge with the family around it and the boy with the non-supportive briefs holding the dog was multiplied 7 times.

If the head a**wipes at today's GE were to decide, miraculously and more than 50 years later, to resurrect the AW-6 from 1947 and produce them today with contemporary materials and technology (which I would expect make them less expensive to manufacture), could anyone think of a better washing machine to run out and buy? What do you think stops them?

Was a very good machine in fact one of the best in its day. I owned the one Robert has and used it in my vacation house in W Va. for almost 10 years. It would be very costly to make used a huge amount of water and was only fair in washing ability like all GE automatics till the V-12s came out. It had numerous other faults that consumers would find unexpected today like excessive sand left in the basket and the high speed would leave too many wrinkles. It is still a neat idea to dream about Ken.

One area where it was in step with modern machines was that it limited the temperature of the hot water entering the machine to 130F to protect the cork seals.
