I've decided after working on this washer today that I am going to switch to COLD water washing, ECO detergent and NO bleach! I want my clothes to smell like last months gym socks combined with dark damp basement smells which feels like the rag the mechanic uses! This IS the way of the future!!

Honestly...

I have never seen a WP DD designed machine that didn't have some level of gunk living in it. Whether the water was hot or not. Crap sticks to plastic wash tubs like spaghetti sauce to tupperware.

I have a Whirlpool

with the fabric softener dispenser in the agitator. It was the nastiest thing. I would try to clean it, and it was awful. After changing agits twice, it finally started to mess up, so I bought an LG that no fabric softener goes in(but I'm guilty of using softening sheets in the dryer). Old washer is in the shed.

GUNKY WASHERS

The plastic outer tubs don't get any dirtier than metal ones do and its much easer to clean off. Any one who has cleaned the porcelain tub cover on an old MT or BDWP washer compared to cleaning the newer plastic tub covers knows what I mean, the plastic will look like new with almost no effort. The blue staining that you see in dryer drums is not fabric softener but dye from blue jeans etc. This is caused by washing in cold water, the excess dye is not washed out and when it gets heated in the dryer it stains the drum and other clothes in the load. This problem is also much worse when the dryer has a nearly clogged or very long vent system. The vent problem causes the dryer to get hotter and steamier and to run twice as long to get things dry. You can tell a lot about peoples washing practices by looking in thier dryers, I was working on a KM electric dryer the other day and the whole drum was gray-brown dirty and when you looked at the washer you could see why. Cold water, too little and cheap dollar store detergent and the washer smelled.

DREWZ, the blue in the dryer drums usually comes from the dye in jeans that is not washed out in cold water.

WP softener dispensers could be removed from the agitator so that they could be flushed with hot water to remove gunk deposits. With the dispenser removed, it is also possible to flush the dispenser receptacle to clean it. It is more operator error or just plain ignorance than a design flaw when they get filled with sludge.

I was talking about

what was under the softener dispenser. I would pull it out, and would try to clean it with vinegar or anything I could think of. When I changed the agits, I would soak the cap in hot water to remove the gunk. I don't use fabric softener in the washer anymore.

Maybe the previous owner was trying to do a biological experiment to come up with the best medium to grow a culture in :)

It looks gross though!

There's a lot to be said for plenty of enzymes, surfactants and a touch of peroxide!

GROSS!!!

Has anybody gone to the laundromat and noticed the nasty 3rd compartment the is always has mold and crud in it.

Blue in drum

When we moved into this house, it came with a W/D set that was a few years old. Inside the dryer it is totally blue. I have tried using regular cleaners to get rid of it but to no avail. Magic Eraser worked some but I would need about 20 of them to complete the job (and my arms would kill me!).

Any suggestions?
