A few days ago, I got the 1974 Frigidaire Custom Deluxe that Paul found on Craigslist and today, I got a new washer/dryer set.

The model number looks similar to the one of my WIC-A but the washer is quite different...

Guess what it is!

You got it Patrick!

There still in my garage waiting for minor repairs and cleaning (that I hope should be done later today!).

Just Gorgeous!

Those are so beautiful, IMO the best looking washer and dryer ever. I'm so glad they've gone to a good home where they can be preserved and the rest of us can drool over the pictures!

1957 Control Tower Pair

WOW Phil I am glad you got these cool machines, I too have long considered this to be GM-Frigidaires best styling effort ever. Even though they were a little controversial and very unconventional I think it took real guts for GM to actually bring these to market, normally something like this would have come from a smaller company like Chrysler or maybe even American Motors. I also have a white pair of these in the collection, and I hear someone up in your direction is hording to only know Charcoal pair of these neat machines.

Phil you may have the only REAL Canadian pair of these, on my washer the model # is WI-57, I wounder if the C  in your washers model # was for the Canadian model, by the next year Frigidaire added the word Custom in the name of their TOL appliances, WCI-58, for washer Custom Imperial for example. I always thought it was funny when we started seeing Chevy Pick-Up trucks in the 1970s with names on them like Custom Deluxe as it always made me think of an appliance not the butch image that one would expect on a PU truck.

When I was in elementary school, a friend's father worked for GM in Doraville. His mom had the DI56 and a special drop in model 57 washer that looked like the Deluxe but had the Unimatic mechanism and the 3 ring agitator instead of the Pulsamatic with the solid agitator. Being the deluxe model, it did not have the rinse water temp selector. Anyway, something was wrong with the escapement in the timer. The pointer would proceed through the wash and first spin, then when it started the rinsing, the pointer moved backwards, so it ended up where it started, but to start it again, the pointer had to be turned 360 degrees. It also had some problem with, as his mother explained, something jumping the track in the machine (?!?) which rendered the whole machine powerless until the father fixed it, but I never got to ask the father about it. I tried the reset button, but it was not that.

1957 is the first year of Frigidaire appliances I really like (I really like the 1957 ranges) but control towers aeren't my favorites (I really like the '65-66 Rollermatic, the 1959-64 Multimatics) and of course, the Custom Imperial 1958 models! But now that I look at mine closely, I have to say they impress me more than they used to!

but control towers aeren't my favorites

Wait till you use these! More pics and a story would be awesome too. Gl getting them up and running

Stunning. Completely stunning. They look brand new (and surprisingly contemporary). Those would not look out of place at all in a spread in Dwell or Metropolis magazine, not to mention, of course, Atomic Ranch...

"but control towers aren't my favorites"

Phil, I have total empathy. This is the machine I grew up with, always coveting neighbor Tom's Whirlpool instead. I thought the tower looked so ungainly, like a square-headed robot. The grass being greener on the other side, every other washer encountered was preferred to the Tower. I just didn't appreciate it. When it was replaced by a Custom Deluxe Copper Rollermatic, I was in heaven. Seeing that nasty old robot carted away on a stretcher was a happy day.

Only through peer pressure, advancing age, and nostalgia have I come to genuflect before the almighty Tower, but only if the color is rare: charcoal, gold, purple, pink, and green.

Your set, though, is stunning in white, and it looks brand new. Wishing you many, many happy 1140 rmp spins.

WOAH! Control tower set! They look beautiful. I am green with envy hahaha.

They look perfect, show room condition. Beautiful find and acquisition, congratulations!
