Need your Help Please! KD-10

Hey Guys,

My KD-10 was leaking water out of the pump seals and the water ran into the motor. There was lots of smoke and your could smell an electric burning. The motor is no longer working so I believe the motor is burned up.

What are my options? Can any one repair and rebuild these motors, I would also need new pump seals to stop the leaking.

Where do I start?

I have the Service Manual and I am going to take the motor out and take a look. It does not look that hard to remove.

Not good news at all!

Hate to rain on your parade but you will not find a motor like that any more as they were obsolete on the 70's. The motor surely can be rebuilt by installing new bearings and having the motor rewound at a good motor shop. They used a John Crane Seal so a good pump shop should be able to match it up for you. If someone has the part number from the parts manual, post it here and I can check availablity for you. If it happens to be a 77107, there may still be one available.

It is a shame that the machine is viable bu the heart of it has failed.

What stevet is telling you is that she can be saved.

You can't get a new motor, but the one that failed can be repaired like new.

Don't despair! If you have the motor rebuilt, you'll probably get much better service out of the machine than you would have otherwise, so this is actually a plus if you look at it the right way.

Cheer up!

I did not want to make you think all was lost. You should be able to find a rebuilder and the shaft seal. The cork gasket that sealed the motor to the tank can be made by you and should work just fine. It may take some time but you will get the old lady running again and for probably another 50 years too!

If you have a parts breakdown of the pump, email it to me and I will see what I can find out for you.

I am glad this thread has started

Because I have a KD-10as well that has been half-way disassembled for about 6 months now. My pump seal was leaking so I was going to just disassemble the motor and pump assembly and fabricate a new seal. The problem I have run in to is removing the impeller from the drive shaft so I can pull the motor off. Any suggestions?

Same Problem

I have the same problem with getting off the impeller. I take the screw off but the impeller won't move. I am wondering if it is rusted to the shaft.

Can you pry it off, is there something you can spray to dissolve the rust. I need help in this area as well.

Glad That You're Encouraged....

I know it must have been extremely disheartening to see a failure that soon after you went through so much to buy it and install it.

However, since your daily driver car is a Packard, I consider you an ideal candidate for the learning curve that will come with fixing this problem. You have a lot of skills you can apply to this - there will be a lot of questions, but I have an idea you'll often find that the answers are already inside you.

Impeller

As far as getting the impeller off, spray some PB Blaster on the shaft so it can soak thru between the shaft and impeller and then try to pry it off by placing 2 screwdrivers between the housing and impeller and pry it up. It may take a few tries but should come off. If you have a small enough puller, you can try that too. Just don't wail away on it as it can bend.
A faucet handle puller or battery terminal puller may just work too. Maybe try putting the puller on and tightening it and then the screwdrivers.
Or since the seal leaks anyway, use a bernz-o-matic and heat the brass up and see if you can dislodge it that way. When you put it back on, use anti seize on the shaft and the next time should be easier.
