Just saw an ad for a version of Cascade that's supposed to preent glass etching. Wonder how it's supposed to work?

Cascade has been selling their rinse aid with "etching shield" for some time now, and IIRC Electrsol may have something similar in both detergent and rinse aid.

Automatic dishwasher rinse aid agents are what marketing people would call a "mature" product, like toothpaste. Basically all rinse agents are surfactants to make water sheet off dishes to prevent spots and speed drying. Everything after that is basically just to sell more product/get a leg up on the competition.

Etching Shield, RIGHT...

Well when I was first experimenting with the glass lid on the Apex dishwasher it took me a few tries to get the seal around the glass just right. I was using Cascade with Shine/Etching Shield and a little bit of wash water leaked out onto the top of the glass during wash. I didn't wipe off the glass for a few hours and sure enough where the water sat along the edge of the glass there is a large permenant etch mark! Go figure.

I ??

"I was experimenting.." "I" Ahem! Who was holding all that closed cell foam while "I' pasted it down on that APEX MISTER??

Nice to meet you "I".

I want to know when Cascade will go back to its original scent detergent the chemical smell kind from Childhood I am sick of all these FOOD smell detergents. DW detergents should not smell like food they are getting rid of food so they should smell like Chemicals! Remember the 1930's motto "Better living through Chemistry"!

THANK YOU!!

Im with you, Jon.... I miss that clean chlorine smell of doing dishes. My guess is that since chlorine and stainless steel dont mix well, they had to revert to the (yuk) enzyme based formulas or that lemon crap :(

Old Cascade

God, how I remember how old Cascade used to STINK to high heaven! None of the other detergents smelled like it even the ones that also contained chlorine.

I have a box of Electrosol in my cabinet that has to be at least a few years old.If open detergent is stored in a dry place, will it loose it's effectiveness after that much time?
I notice my WP dw is not cleaning coffee or tea stains well.I don't know if it is the detergent or the machine itself.I am thinking it is probably the detergent,as everything else comes out great.Just curious

Read somewhere that once opened powdered dw detergents should be used quickly as possible, as they begin to slowly break down. For this reason amoung others, prefer the Electrasol tablets. Stocked up when local stores put them on close-out two or more years ago and still have a few boxes left. Those individually wrapped tablets stay "fresh", although the ones without "Jet Dry Powerball" tend to get rock hard after three years! *LOL*

SS and Chlorine

Hi Guys,

I get confused everytime this little nugget pops up, I didnt realise that SS and Chlorine interact badly.

Chlorine bleach is used in F/L washers in AU if you choose.
I have a box of original Finish Diswasher power, it contains Chlorine and its the same as my grandmother has been using in the same ss tub'd dishwasher for 20+ years without a worry.

Speed Queen Domestic machines have a liquid chlorine bleach dispenser and a SS tub.

Does anyone who knows, know if this is true, or whether bleach + S/Steel = BAD is an old wives tale?

Finish in Chlorine and Enzyme Based

Back on Topic,

We have 2 main types of Finish Brand Dishwasher powder available. One is Chlorine based, the other is Enzyme based. They both smell the same, and are great at leaving that burning feeling in ones throat when pouring it into a hot dishwasher. I think at most, you get Lemon or unscented here. Tablets only come in Enzyme Form.

A marketer probably polled suburban america, and they decided that like everything else, they wanted options in the type of scent there was available for dishwasher powder. So like most other products in the US, the consumer now has options.

The enzyme based one is reccommended by Villeroy and Boch Wedgewood and Waterford, in addition to the recommendations of the Dishwasher manufacturers.

The Chlorine based detergent is only recommended by the Dishwasher manufacturers.

We've just had an anti etching crystal released which is a big plastic crystal filled with granules supposedly to stop etching. They reccommend using in addition to rinse aid. I have no idea how it works.

I use both enzyme and chlorine based products - sometimes in the same load. Enzyme for the first pre-wash and chlorine for the main wash. I have tried the tablets, packets and pouches of detergents and they work just fine, but I never, ever start the dishwasher without some form of detergent in the first fill to emulsify grease and oil and suspend the bulk of the soil that is removed in that first pre-wash. If you have soap scum on your shower tile - spraying with with plain water (especially hard water) before using a chemical to emulsify and remove the scum and soil is just a waste of time - let the chemicals do the work!

I always thought that bleach will cancel out any action of enzyme detergents. I could be wrong. Even if it is not in the same wash water. Having a ss tub d/w, I have avoided bleach based detergents, even though they are getting hard to find. The only one I know of is Sunlight powder?????
