Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Whirlpool Vantage

4000 is for the set - still very expensive. I wonder if those extra cycles like Allergen or Baby Wear allow for a truly hot wash.

From PopularMechanics
This top-load washer/dryer combo lets users take control using touchscreen LCDs to select settings such as cycles, temperatures and wash times. There's also a USB port (a washer feature that the manufacturer claims is a first) that allows users to upload firmware updates. And while there's no built-in Internet connection for now, Whirlpool anticipates future iterations breaking that barrier, allowing users to download new cycles and even create their own custom ones.

Treehugger.com says: Now, on to that washer/dryer prototype. I'm told that this Vantage Washer/Dryer set is going to be the industry's first top-load "super energy efficient" washer. I was not given numbers, unfortunately, so we're going to have to wait a bit to see if that's true. But it's a top-loading washer that has similar water efficiency as front-loading washers.

Even though we don't have numbers, it has some really interesting eco-features. The washer and dryer both have touchscreen monitors on which you can select specific cycles for your clothing, allowing you to wash clothes exactly as they should be washed so that they last longer. The dryer syncs up with the washer so it can detect exactly how damp your clothes are, dry for the appropriate time, and shut off when your clothes are dry - not just when the program says they ought to be, avoiding over-drying.

Also, the monitor shows you how energy and water efficient you've been with your cycle selection for each load, and over the course of a month. So at the end of each month, you can see how you can improve the way you wash your clothes to save energy and water. Pretty cool!

If you want pretty...lots of pretty girls in the world...washing machines should actually do a good job of cleaning clothes...these will not

Jury is still out

on whether these machines will clean clothes. Remember, for every person that says something is worthless, there is another that thinks it is the greatest invention ever. What works for some, wont work for others.

How will they clean...seriously...I asked this at the beginning.
There is a reason there is an agitator in most top loaders.
There are even agitators in fl's in a sense (not sure what the correct term is for those big ridges that stick out...).

I seriously don't see these doing anything other than looking "pretty".
Don't get me wrong...I'm a complete gadget freak and if you give me the option of a Miele with no screen and a miele with a screen, I'll go for the screen even if it doesn't do anything other than look "pretty"...however, if you give me the choice between an LG (or this unit) FL with a fancy screen and a Miele with no screen, I'll go with the Miele as I know the Miele will last for years and actually clean clothes...something the others don't

I wish you could edit comments...
"others" is far too general of a term...plenty of washers do a good job...

What this comes down to is

Someone could make alot of money reprograming the boards on these machines to set for high water levels.

4 Grand for something that washes and dries clothes???

Have they gone MAD? lol I can't even fathom spending that much on an appliance. Yeah the touch screens are cool and they hold a lot of clothes, but, as mtn1584 said, too little water, probably poor washing quality and something that won't last a quarter of the lifetime as something vintage. And honestly I don't see how the older washers are that much wasteful when it comes to water usage. If you think about it, fill a washer with clothes, fill it with water, take the clothes out and you'll see exactly how much water it's using. Plus however much is left in the clothes. Now if you use a full load setting on a top loader to wash 1 or 2 articles, yeah that would be wasteful, but how many people actually do that? I prefer to stick with the solid metal tanks of yesteryear. They last almost forever, provide a good, quality wash and won't fill the landfills as fast as these new machines you're lucky to get 5 years out of. But, that's just my 2 cents.
