Yes, that's true. You can avoid or nullify the negative effects of the Oasis/Cabrio/Bravos by following the instructions exactly. Also the merger of Whirlpool and Maytag was actually a benefit because both companies are known for their long-lasting duarbility and high quality aplliances. Also, they did have problems with these machines when they first came out. The control panels would frequently show error codes( Most commonly F40, F41, and F51.) There were also reports of the washer dying with a "pop" of the control panel and being rendered useless and also locking clothes inside when it happened. They thankfully recalled the washer and dryer and improved these problems. They have done this a few more times I belive.
Like it or not, conventional Top-Loaders are going obsolete just like VHS. Soon, the only washers will be Front-Loaders and HE Top-Loaders like the Oasis/Cabrio/Bravos.
Yes, Fisher & Paykel have come out with an agitator-less top loader. It is called the AquaSmart. It has a matching dryer called the AeroSmart which comes in electric and gas modes and yes it is top-loading. It was just realeased to the USA and yes, I did see the set at Lowe's.
Other HE Top-Loaders include the GE Harmony and the Haier Genesis. Both, I think are designed by LG.
