One of Gospel Music's greatest artists has passed......
Anthony Burger
Anthony Burger's brilliant artistry at the piano delighted audiences all over the world for more than 25 years. At the age of 18 months, when devastating third degree burns threatened the future use of his hands, doctors would never have predicted that he would eventually become one of gospel music's premiere musicians.

Anthony once reflected, "...gradually, the Lord healed my hands because He had a job for me to do. I thank God every day that the doctors were wrong..."

He was only five years of age when Anthony's parents discovered his ear for music. The family had just come home from church and Sunday lunch was being prepared when Anthony sat down at the piano and played a song he had heard the congregation sing that morning. Blessed with musical parents, Anthony's natural gift was nurtured with classical training and he eventually became the youngest student ever accepted at Chattanooga's Cadek Conservatory.

The years that followed were spent learning the music of Beethoven, Bach and Mozart, but Anthony's heart always gravitated back to the gospel music that first captured his interest. He began his journey with Christ at the age of nine; decades later, his instrument remained not only a source of entertainment for audiences across the world, but an instrument of worship that spoke of Anthony's abiding commitment to the message of Christ.

His natural gift, combined with years of classical training and broad musical experiences, prepared Anthony for wide variety of opportunities to record and perform in diverse settings, including the White House, nationally televised Billy Graham Crusades, TNN's Prime Time Country television program hosted by Dick Clark, and numerous international appearances.

Among the countless artists who have been blessed to share the stage with this gifted musician, the Gaither Vocal Band depended on Anthony's skills for more than a decade as a guest artist and pianist for the Gaither Homecoming Tour. He also enjoyed playing to sold-out crowds with Mark Lowry on Broadway and Homecoming concerts at Carnegie Hall and "down under" in Australia's Sydney Opera House. You, along with millions of other listeners, might have even heard Anthony playing patriotic favorites on Delta Airline's in-flight music.

With an average of 200 concerts each year, Anthony worked hard. But family time was always a priority. He loved being husband to Luanne and father to A.J., Austin and Lori..

He was once asked what kept him going after 25 years of ministering week after week in churches, halls, campuses and arenas across North America. His answer is profoundly uncomplicated:

"I am a simple man with a majestic instrument and the power of God behind me."

Update

During the evening of Wednesday, February 22, while in concert on the Gaither Homecoming Cruise, Anthony Burger collapsed on-stage. He was taken backstage but was unable to be revived. The exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed, but is thought to have been a heart attack. Anthony was 44 years of age.

Please keep Anthony's family in your prayers during this unexpected and tragic loss.

Thank you Lightedcontrols

for sharing that info I love Gospel music and like seeing the Gaithers on T.V. He was about 5yrs. younger than me. I did not know that Vestil Goodman had passed away I know that Happy had a few years ago, but did not know that Vestil had.
Always loved to hear her sing, because she put so much into a song. Isn't it a comfort to know that these people are with our Lord and Savior Jesus. They aren't in any pain anymore and have new bodies free from the sufferings of this world. I will lift the family up in prayer for strenght and guidance, to be comforted. What a friend we have in Jesus all our sins and griefes to bare. What a privilage to carry everything to God in prayer. Amen. Thank you. (Norgeman, aka Danf).

Don't forget THE VOICE: J.D. Sumner

He's on Elvis records, he's on Gospel records, he was with the Gaither homecoming for a while until he died.

Quartet Gospel is truly an art and for the LONGEST time it stayed behind the scenes at rural churches and old scratchy records. Now it's out in the open, while I think it's a little too over-produced, it's great that you can turn on any Christian network and hear some good ol' Gospel. Such a happy (and sometimes sad) sound of music.

But I miss the old scratchy records the most. We had a bunch of them until Katrina :-( .
