One of Gospel Music's greatest artists has passed......
Anthony Burger
Anthony Burger's brilliant artistry at the piano delighted audiences all over the world for more than 25 years. At the age of 18 months, when devastating third degree burns threatened the future use of his hands, doctors would never have predicted that he would eventually become one of gospel music's premiere musicians.
Anthony once reflected, "...gradually, the Lord healed my hands because He had a job for me to do. I thank God every day that the doctors were wrong..."
He was only five years of age when Anthony's parents discovered his ear for music. The family had just come home from church and Sunday lunch was being prepared when Anthony sat down at the piano and played a song he had heard the congregation sing that morning. Blessed with musical parents, Anthony's natural gift was nurtured with classical training and he eventually became the youngest student ever accepted at Chattanooga's Cadek Conservatory.
The years that followed were spent learning the music of Beethoven, Bach and Mozart, but Anthony's heart always gravitated back to the gospel music that first captured his interest. He began his journey with Christ at the age of nine; decades later, his instrument remained not only a source of entertainment for audiences across the world, but an instrument of worship that spoke of Anthony's abiding commitment to the message of Christ.
His natural gift, combined with years of classical training and broad musical experiences, prepared Anthony for wide variety of opportunities to record and perform in diverse settings, including the White House, nationally televised Billy Graham Crusades, TNN's Prime Time Country television program hosted by Dick Clark, and numerous international appearances.
Among the countless artists who have been blessed to share the stage with this gifted musician, the Gaither Vocal Band depended on Anthony's skills for more than a decade as a guest artist and pianist for the Gaither Homecoming Tour. He also enjoyed playing to sold-out crowds with Mark Lowry on Broadway and Homecoming concerts at Carnegie Hall and "down under" in Australia's Sydney Opera House. You, along with millions of other listeners, might have even heard Anthony playing patriotic favorites on Delta Airline's in-flight music.
With an average of 200 concerts each year, Anthony worked hard. But family time was always a priority. He loved being husband to Luanne and father to A.J., Austin and Lori..
He was once asked what kept him going after 25 years of ministering week after week in churches, halls, campuses and arenas across North America. His answer is profoundly uncomplicated:
"I am a simple man with a majestic instrument and the power of God behind me."
