While reading thru an issue of Time magazine-saw an ad for a Philips plasma TV set that has "Ambilite"That shines on the wall behind the set giving a "halo" effect-sort of like a Sylvania "Halolite" TV.Saw one in person at BB last weekend-told the salesman it was like a Sylvania "Halolite" TV-had to explain to him.

Those have been on the market for a few months, but I've not seen one in-the-flesh. I don't know if I'd like the Ambilite effect, it might be distracting. I've had a Panasonic plasma for three years, with a black frame, looks nice in a darkened room, with the picture kind of hanging there.

I can agree-the set is best in the dark.I suppose the "Halolite" and "Ambilites" were sort of "bias" lights. Some folks like them.I am with you I don't-and it looks like on the Philips TV you can turn it off.You would ahve to mount the screen away from the wall.In the BB display-the set screen was mounted on a display "wall" to show the effect. When the set has a bright picture-the light is bright-in a dark scene-it is dimmed.I alos like to watch my RPTV in the darkened room. Can't afford a "plasma" set at this time.
