The most popular detergent along with one of the most popular automatic washers of the time. Looks like a 1956 Norge washer. My folks had a 1957 pair that looked similar to this washer. The washer did have a separate water temp dial for the wash and rinse. Norge made a washer that did a very good job of washing, rinsing and spinning out the clothes. They were one speed machines that had issues with the pump and other things that required more servicing than most automatic washers. The matching dryers usually long outlasted the washers.

Norge introduced the Ripplet agitator for washing delicates and woolens in their single speed washers. It had almost no vanes and it was possible to wash and rinse woolens almost automatically without damaging them. The fast spin was not a problem because woolens hold a lot of water and need a fast spin to help with drying.

 

A salesman friend in the appliance department at Rich's gave me the booklet from Norge Let's Cook Up a Wash which is in the Ephemera Section here and it discusses and has pictures of the Ripplet.

Tide Detergent

When I was very small I remember my mother used Rinso Blue. But I think when she went from the old Bendix to a Frigidaire, that's when she switched to Tide and used it for the rest of her life.

When I see a machine like this Norge I always wonder whether gunk and dust and stuff got around those little knobs. That is one advantage to slick electronic controls--one of the few, in my opinion. I can remember in one of the old CR washer tests that they dinged a GE Filter-Flo from the early 60's because the control panel wasn't solid in the back and small items could slip behind the machine, going between the posts for the control panel.

Yes this is a 1956 model, I’ve have had this machine in my collection now for 20 years, it was one of my first machines. Found it at an estate sale for $5. It does a pretty good job overall, however it doesn’t hold as much as other machines of the same time. Dust and debris behind the controls really has not been an issue in any way.

Robert-- Is your '56 equipped with a suds-saver? If so, how does that work with a solid tub? I ask because the temp control reads Hot, Warm, Suds.

Hi Eugene, yes my '56 Norge is a suds-saver. I has a separate pump to return the wash water from the sink into the main fill flume and down into the wash tub.
