I always enjoy the pod...in fact it's part of my morning routine before starting work. I've seen today's pod before and I was wondering if anyone beside me is a little grossed out by a machine that washes dirty clothes and dishes? I'm probably over thinking this but I just can't seem to get past poopie cloth diapers and the dinner dishes all being washed in the same tub.

Nope . . .

IIRC the Thor washer and dishwasher tubs are separate units and mount onto the lower part of the machine that has the motor, so no part of the DW interior is used for clothes washing or vice versa.

Mark-
I totally understand where you are coming from concerning the Thor machine. I myself was thinking along the same lines as you are about dirty diapers and dirty dishes. But once I found out that the machine operates with different tubs for the two different operations the thought of doodoo dishes was washed away so to speak. LOL Look at the machine as being an overgrown Oster blender with a processor attachment---They both use the same motor base but use two different containers for their functions. The same is true of the Thor Automagic- one tub for dishes, one tub for clothes.

Other Thor ads stressed that no part that touches the clothes touches the dishes, so the "ick factor" was addressed from the start. The nice thing about manually controlled dishwashers like the Thor was that you could run a prerinse long enough to heat up the machine and dishes before shutting off the water and adding detergent for the wash. See other threads for a description of the shallow base pan that held the water so during the prerinse, the excess water just overflowed the pan and went down the drain. Back then detergents for dishwashers were not that great so cleaning tough soil was not expected. The only one I saw used was in early 1955 before we moved from Illinois to Georgia. The family lived in a beautiful home that I guess was considered a mansion and had help. She was the person who ran the Thor, but my mom and the lady who owned the Thor joined with dishtowels to remove and dry the dishes after the meal. They had a fountain done in green tile where the staircase made a turn to the landing in the entry hall. It was not big enough for swimming.

thanks

Ok...thanks for explaining how the Thor worked. I just assumed the insert tub/basket had holes in it and the dishwasher filled with water and acted as the outer tub. I guess for the time period it was the real deal. I was on a very tight budget when my son was a baby and I had to use cloth diapers at home and save the pampers for the day care. I remember well how gross and germie it was to wash the pee-pee and poopie diapers... daily..I'll spare you all what the ordeal was like if I had to go over 1 day without washing!!!
