The ad says the old Maytag stopped cold one day. It was probably a machine with the wiring in the lid. John said that the wiring insulation used to get stiff and the switches would not work or the wires would break where they came out of the back of the lid and went into the cabinet. AMP-style machines were not trouble free.

This ad probably dates from the late 50s, a few years before West Hyattsville and most of Prince George's County underwent white flight. I go through the West Hyattsville Metro Station on the way to and from work. I'll think about the Maytag as I go through there this afternoon. I wonder if the children from these Maytag ads ever see themselves in old magazines.

My favorite era of Maytag. A childhood friend had a great TOL ‘59 in their laundry room. We were often unsupervised and his mom would be thrilled to come home from work to find that a load or two of laundry had been done. What a treat—more for me than her, actually.

I stuck something behind the lid to keep it working with the lid up and loved how a full fill came almost up to the top of the agitator. The surface of the water seemed so calm during agitation compared to our ‘60 Model 80 Kenmore with its rowdy, preggers Roto-Swirl and waterfall lint filter. Thought the spin-drain was super-cool, as well. Much quieter than the Kenmore, too.
