If you want to know what a steady job of liquid detergents can do to a washer, look at the lint trap/pump cleanout of your front loader. Just did my Miele after a long period of neglect and it was disgusting. Have been using liquids more often as of late in an effort to make a dent in my stash, but must remember to do frequent hot washes with powder detergent and or a good dose of oxygen bleach as well.
Am willing to bet a major cause of "smelly washer" syndrome is exclusive use of liquid detergents aggravated by warmish to cold water washing without bleaches.
