Pyrex Storage Bowls

Last week I ventured to The Pyrex website to look for kids to go on my Butterfly Gold bowl set.

While I was there I noticed they have several patterned 4 cup bowls with lids.
Best part was they had limited edition bowls in vintage patterns.

Naturally I bought all the vintage patterns they had:
Butterfly Gold
Spring Blossom
Snowflake
Butterprint

I think the Butterfly Gold and Spring Blossom patterns were very good reproductions, only thing being Spring Blossom is in turquoise which I think looks better.
The Butterprint is pretty nice, but the Snowflake one could have been executed a little better.

Overall I'm thrilled that these were available, especially Butterfly Gold which is my everyday dinnerware.

Nice bowls, Sam. I prefer to store some foods in glass rather than plastic, which can sometimes retain or transmit odors. My nested 3-bowl Pyrex set gets frequent use. My only quibble---of which you may already be aware, since you were initially looking for lids---is that the flexible lids can develop tears/splits around the rim after 20+ trips through the dishwasher.

I was very sketchy buying the Pyrex sets at BJ's for that reason.

And sure enough, they are all splitting especially the rectangular ones.

Sam - Butterfly Gold is also my everyday dish pattern but I have not seen these bowls in Butterfly Gold in stores here in Detroit. One store had the Snowflake and Butterprint but that was it. Maybe I need to order direct from Pyrex.

I love glass storage bowls! They don't stain, are easy cleaning, and can go in the oven. But I never put these storage bowl in the dishwasher - I always wash them in the sink, which is probably why I have never experienced the lids splitting.

Those are pretty cool, I didn't know they made these with patterns. We have some of the vintage butterfly gold ones. I don't collect glassware, but I do think they're cool in an old-fashioned way that brings memories.

We do have some newer Pyrex bowls like these, but they're just the plain ones with a blue lid. And the lids do tend to crack on them. I haven't had that happen with the ones with the gray lid with a vent flap, but the blue lids usually crack.

Out of curiosity, when you guys are talking about the lids splitting, are you using the heated dry cycle on your dishwasher?

I have only used heated dry a handful of times on the dishwashers I've had since I've been living on my own and I have my same pyrex set that I bought 12 years ago. The lids are tight and don't show any wear on them. I throw them in the dishwasher same as the bowls.

I like my pyrex, but I wish I could find some thin corelle storage dishes with air tight lids, I like how light the few that I have are.

I never use heated dry, so the splits were caused by other factors.

I am gradually replacing my plastic storage containers with the Pyrex glass.  One thing I don't like are the lids.  They seem to be cheap flimsy things that distort easily when you place them half over a dish in the microwave.  They emerge bent, half folded, and everything else.  I always have to bend them back into shape.

 

Don't like the lids.

I have some of these, but clear glass with red plastic lids in two shades, bought at different times. Love the bowls, hate the lids. Heat is their mortal enemy so it makes sense that prolonged hot water in the dishwasher would eventually degrade them enough to split. We had a couple warp badly just propped over a bowl in the microwave.

I was hoping when these first were introduced some years ago, that Pyrex would get some silicone lids figured out, but alas, no. Those vintage patterns are great, but can't justify more of those lids.

I have replaced most of my plastic storage containers with Pyrex or Anchor Hocking myself.  So far my lids haven't split...but the Corning Ware lids are completely shot!  I need to find some replacements for them.  Speaking of Corning Ware...anyone notice in recent years that it is now made in China and no longer stove top safe?  My set was made in USA and safe for stove top, oven, and microwave.  They don't make 'em like they used to.

When I complained...

about the cracking lids directly to the manufacturer, Anchor Hocking (I think), they advised never to microwave the lids. I stopped doing it and the cracking lid issue went away. Mine are in the dishwasher constantly. I used them for lunch at work every day. YMMV!
