What's everyone's opinion of Amway's (Quixstar) SA8 detergent? I've never used it and have heard many people rave about its performance. What suds level does it have? Does it have a perfume? Is it worth the expense? Will it work well in a top-loading washer? Whatever you can tell me would be a help!

It's expensive, but wonderful

In my top-loading Maytag, it barely makes suds, but the water is slippery, and the cleaning is excellent. It has a light fragrance, to me, it is a slight citrus scent. So far, I have not found a stain it can't handle. Or, at least improve greatly.

It rinses very easily.

While I deplore Amway/Quixtar's corporate politics, they do offer one great laundry detergent.

I agree...I use SA8 and I am a convert to it. I used to think that the German Persil was the standard to which I would judge a detergent. Not any more. Its a great HE detergent and there are no suds in my Miele. Rinses very thoroughly and when the 2nd rinse starts the water is clear. No need for another rinse. The smell is a tad on the citrus side but after a cycle its not noticeable. I also use the SA8 TriZyme that I love and the All Fabric Bleach. The SA8 softener does a good job and I use the Original scent. When the clothes come out of the dryer they have a slight hint of the scent and what it smells like is if they were dried outside.
On another note I did buy the MieleCare UltraWhite powder. Its made by Kreussler in Germany. The results are very good and no suds as well.

I'm also a recent convert to Quixtar's line of laundry products. SA8 is fantastic, as is Tri-Zyme and their All-Fabric Bleach. I use their softener (original scent), but am going to try their signature scent on my next order. I also tried their aerosol spray stain remover and it's really, really excellent. Does a much better job of removing greasy stains--even old ones--- than Shout, Spray-n-Wash, etc.

As noted by the posts above, products are low-sudsing and clean-rinsing.

I order everything online so as not to be bothered by their (sometimes) pushy salespeople. I set up an online account at Quixtar.com and requested no contact or e-mail. So far, so good. I've been ordering from them for about a year.

Highly recommended. Their automatic dishwasher detergent (Dish Drops) is great, too, by the way...

Yes they're all a little expensive, but I've found them to be worth it. If forced to give up one product, I'd probably forego the fabric softener. I use all the products in both my front- and top-loaders with excellent results.

Amway/Quixtar

I wouldn't buy anything from Amway/Quixtar.
The company was founded and is operated by one of the biggest right winged, Republican donors in America, the De Vos family.
I do research on companies I spend my money with. If they support or donate to candidates who support an extreme right winged, homophobic agenda, I don't spend my money with them..That is the main reason I closed out my accounts and credit card with Wachovia Bank.

My mindset is why empower the enemy....

It was fabulous back in the 1980's and it's just as fabulous today. Combine it with TriZyme, and nothing can beat it.

thanks, Lawrence

so it's strictly an on-line affair.

there's no where i can go tomorrow and buy some.

you know how it goes: you want it bad and you want it now.

ever in search of the perfect soap and the perfect scent!!!

Thanks, again.

mickeyd-- Quixtar also has local salespeople who can be contacted for products, but I wouldn't do it that way. I've found they send product quickly from their online store---usually get it within a few days. The salespeople, naturally, want to sell more, more, more to you and I don't like that. I really have no interest in any other Quixtar products.

I also understand Shane's reluctance to do business with them due to the political figures they support. I do a very small amount of business with them over the course of a year. Less than $300 last year.

I found that the green plastic measure full is far too much in my front loaders. The wash was too sudsy and so were the rinses, but half the amount or less still cleans and rinses away well. Actually, I used about the same amount of SA-8 as powder Tide HE. I bought the detergent when I tried the nutritional shakes that a co-worker brings to work. She is a rep. The shakes were pretty awful and the box of detergent, which is not frequently used, should last me a long time; maybe not as long as the prison sentence the brother-in-law who owns Blackwater deserves, but long enough that I won't be spending much money with them if I buy a box every couple of years if I buy the detergent again.

Tom---I never use a full scoop of Tide HE (or a capful of the liquid version) in my front-loader, either. I'd have suds 'til next week! I use about 1/3 of a scoop for most loads, a little more for moderately-soiled loads.

In super-stain situations, I've used 2 scoops of SA8, and a scoop each of Tri-Zyme and All-Fabric Bleach in my front-loader with no sudsing issues. (All three of them have a 2-tablespoon sized scoop which comes with the product.)

What's the difference between the Tri-Zyme and the All-Fabric Bleach? For instance, when would you use one versus the other? Once I work down my current stash a little I think I might try some of this Quixtar stuff, but I'm not really sure where to start with it. And is the SA8 with Bioquest recommended over the regular SA8?

Eugene, I'm familiar with the size of your Frigidaire front-loader, so what quantity of the Quixtar products do you use for typical (not heavily stained) loads?

Tom, Which SA8 do you have? SA8 Plus(the, now discontinued, with PO4) or the SA8 Sensitive? Both use a green scoop and 1/4 cup dosing. Or the Bioquest, with a blue scoop and 1/8 cup dosing? The Bioquest is the lowest sudsing of the lot and rinses the best. Sensitive is highest, I couldn't use it, even in my old Frigidaire from 2000. Plus is somewhere in between, but you need to use a half of a green scoop.
David, Tri-zyme is an enzyme product much like the old Biz. It also contains OBA's and is quite effective at removing protein stainaand heavy soiling, you can use it as a presoak or a detergent booster. All Fabric Bleach is a very high concentration sodium percarbonate bleach.
I've used these products since 1996 in 3 machines, a TL and 2 FL, one of which was a Frigidaire. I never had a sudsing issue in the Frigidaire, using 1 scoop for a full, normal load. I don't do that in my Bosch, though, some loads it does suds a bit much sometimes, esp with towels, so use a 1/2 to 3/4 scoop. Though, it rinses away quickly, like the Henkel products do.
Because of the same political reasons Shane cites, I chose not to use these products for the last couple of years and after a great customer service experience with my 8 year old water filtre, I've decided to selectively use the products again. The laundry system really is the best available in the US.

Hi David,

Todd answered most of your questions. I highly recommend all three products (Tri-Zyme/All-Fab/SA8) but if you want to dip your toe in the water first, at least get the SA8.

I use SA8 and related products mainly for loads of kitchen whites, which ranges from very stained to you're-really-gonna-try-to- wash-that? stained.

When using SA8 for a non-stained load, I use 1 (2-tablespoon) scoop of SA8 all by itself. But since I like to use different detergents for fun, I usually use one of the Persils, Ariels, Tide Coldwater or other detergents in my stash for non-challenging loads. I cook a lot, so there are at least a couple of kitchen whites loads per week that get the full SA8 product line treatment. Their aerosol stain spray for getting out greasy stains is fantastic, too. Much better than Spray 'n' Wash, etc.

Tri-Zyme is considered a soaking agent/detergent booster, and it does its best work when you agitate a load for a few minutes, then let it soak for an hour or more. When soaking in my FL'er, I let the load tumble a few times to redistribute the clothes and soaking agents.

For most loads in the W1986, I use a slightly less than full standard coffee measure, which is two level tablespoons, of the Tide HE along with STPP. I have several of the long handle gold measures that came with the Mr. Coffee machines in the 70s. I figured out that less than half of the little green plastic scoop included with the SA8, along with STPP, is sufficient for most loads and have used as much as just above the middle line for some larger loads. The full scoop of SA8 along with STPP is enough for the few loads washed in the top loaders, but I have other regular sudsing products to use in them. Todd, I have the box at home. I think I bought 6 or 8 pounds, but I honestly don't know which formula it is although it came with the green scoop. Maybe it's the PLUS. I bought it to try, and it cleans well, but I very seldom use it. I have a chart on a clip board detailing each use so I will see how many loads I get out of the box. I have a lot of other detergents on hand that I like (detergent promiscuity), but I mostly use the Tide HE and Persil powders in the front loaders. I'd rather spend money with the German company than any derivative of Amway. That group and the causes & organizations their money supports seek to deny me basic human rights and probably wish I did not even exist. I know I have no impact on them, but in my conscience I feel I have done my little bit to stand up to the dark side even if, in a moment of weakness, I bought their product to see why Consumer Reports top rated it.

SA *8 bioquest

I have used it here in this plant for years. Together Trizyme and all fabric Bleach there is not anything that is any better.. I have also found that it does do a very good job at lower temps too.. I use it on very nasty blood and surgery work and everyting comes clean and it takes odors out of the endoscopy work too. And does it all WITHOUT Chlorine Bleach!

Overhere Amway's detergent is called SA8 Premium. It comes with a small blue scoop. I have done only a few loads with it, but until now I'm pleased with it.

The fabric softener is another story. It's the Alpine Floral version. I don't like the scent, it's too strong for me. And besides that it's way too thick. It's the first softener that clogged the softener dispenser in several washers. Overhere some concentrated softers are much thinner.

I've been using Ecolabs' "Laundrybrite with Bleach". I tend to use it only for the high-temperature "Sanitize" cycle on the LG. It produces absolutely no suds and it cleans better than anything I've experienced. A quart of the stuff weighs a freaking ton! Very hard to get; I had to bribe the steward at work to buy a box for me and 40 pounds of it cost over a hundred dollars. Of course, I'll never have to buy detergent again in my life. I may even leave to some of you in my will. Be nice to me.
