Slowly I fill...

So, MisterBobby has a strange creature in his laundry closet these days. The World Washer has been replaced with a curious blue-fronted Whirlpool Duet, a gift from his parents.

Its exhibiting an odd behavior. If not used, it tends to slowly fill with water over time. About 3-4 gallons in the course of a week. Drain and spin, and the machine is good to go.

So I'm thinking a bad water valve. Or a clogged valve. Any thoughts? Ideas?

Duet washer problem

This is indeed a bad inlet valve, this has been a very common problem with the earlier Duets etc. I know of no way to fix the valve as it does not come apart, it would be best to keep the water turned off to the washer when not in use as I have seen many these flood as the water flow can easily go from a drip to a trickle and fill the machine up. However If the door is kept closed the machine drain pump will come on as needed to pump out the excess water.

If the door is closed and the water level gets high enough, will it pump itself out? Or do nothing until you power it on?

Looks like a replacement inlet valve is in order. I don't want the machine getting moldy!

Loved the "Niagra Falls" reference

Our Duet did this, but intermittently. The machine was only about 18 months old when we sold the house and left it behind. Only once did it ever go so long as to have water become evident in the basket, at which time I set it to drain and spin.

Since it wouldn't always leak, I was still waiting for the problem to get worse before requesting warranty work. But then we moved. And the Lowes extended warranty was transferable to the new owner.

This happened on a brand new LG that my ex wife has. The machine flooded the basement twice before she called for service. They replaced the water valve, and tried to say it was because of hard water, in the mean time we had a Kenmore top loader for 6 years before that and never had a problem with the water valves.
PS after it was fixed, about six months later the machine did the same thing again, the service man said it was because she used too much detergent...BS

Water Valves

The thing I noticed with the Duet is that the valves opened and closed a lot more. Their "Catalyst" wash system would meter in the water and fill over a period of minutes, supposedly to run the clothing through a very saturated detergent solution. The valves would open and close several times before the final water level was reached. One way or the other, just based on the Duet's initial fill process the valves are getting several times the wear of of any brainless TL machine's valve that simply does the open/fill/close cycle once.

I also recall one or both Duet valves making a squeaking sound upon closing. My Affinity is doing the same thing lately.
