LOL... this very issue was the proximate cause of me divorcing my first wife! Handles-down makes no sense to me -- it puts the dirty end farther from the wash arm, and when you go to unload it, you get stabbed by the steak knives. I long ago learned to put my OCD aside for this one instance, and scatter things around so that the spoons don't nest. Embrace the chaos!
The manual for our Maytag dishwasher recommends putting the silverware in with the points down. This is to prevent injury to the person loading the machine.
But we have always done it this way anyway.
So I tend to put handles up. However, in the 78 Kenmore (need to get that liberated from the basement and run it) and in the current 56 GE pull-out, I load handles down EXCEPT with really sharp knives.
I always put the handles down and the points up! I guess I like getting stabbed by the knives. lol I have really never had any problems with that sort of thing,(watch, I have a load to empty now and will probably cut of my hand for saying this)lol I scatter silverware so that it won't nest. I use Finish with the powerball to wash with. OH, and whatever happaned to Dove dishwashing detergent? I really liked that on my good china. Have fun, Gary
I mix mine. Things like steak knives get loaded points down. I can get more silverware in if I load handles down. This has been bone of contension in my house for years. I find if you load handles up, you get less in the basket. With todays multilevel wash action having handles down, I never find a piece that was "missed" like I do when loaded with handles up.
The newer dishwashers have the silverware slots which keep the flatware separated. You can also open the baskets to load the other way. I find that loading up with using the slots that you get wash action from the bottom and also the middle spray arms sprays down. I think this is better washing action then just loading with the handles up. The fork tines and spoons are exposed to the spraying of the middle wash arm and bottom wash arm.
There was a case in scotland a couple of years ago about a woman who slipped when unloading the D/washer, landed face down on the cutlery basket, her knifes were handles down. Very sad and makes me queezy just to think about it.
My Kitchen Aid has individual slots for each piece so it is handles down for the spoons and forks. I have 2 sets of knives - 1 set I can put handle up but the other set has to be handle down.
Handles down except for dinner knives. Never nest anything and NEVER put good knives in the dishwasher, they get washed by hand. I have rarely had a problem with anything not coming clean. My dishwasher has the silverware basket in the center front of the bottom rack.
This topic has been beaten like a dead horse in my house...servie end up..period..I think they get cleaner...I wash my hands with hot water and soap before I unload a clean load and I try not to touch the servcie end any more than is possible. There was an incident I remember a few years back where a toddler fell over an open dish washer and got stabbed by a sharp knife...my baby is 19 years old...I keep my eye on him when he's around the open dishwasher...lol. However I think for infection controll concerns..service end should be down in instutional settings.
