Actually, the first corn I ever ate was in Athens in 1968. Then roasted corn on the cob was commonly available from street vendors and it was yummy, just like the fresh bread pretzels that men used to carry around on very long sticks. That and a glass of ice-cold water with vanilla fondant in it used to be my daily treat.

From distant recall, the little corn that is grown in northern Europe is for stock feed and not the same as sweet corn. It is mealy and bland in flavor. It may well be that sweet corn needs a warmer climate.

Whilst corn is eaten in Australia, corn bread is not. At supermarkets they only sell polenta (coarse-ground yellow corn meal). If I want a finer grade of maze flour I have to buy it from the health food store. Then again, I can buy Jiffy Corn Bread mix from our American food store.

I love American home cooking. I do a great sweet potato pie with roasted almonds and marshmallows. Using McCormick's pumpkin pie spice and Libby's canned mashed pumpkin I can knock together one of them pies too. Pumpkin is another thing that is mainly fed to pigs in Europe. Another favorite of mine is a nice bowl of piping-hot pumpkin soup with cracked black pepper, sour cream and chives. Most Australians like their pumpkin roasted.

Over here turkey is served up for Christmas and our cranberry sauce generally comes in jars. Ocean Spray tends to be a good pick.
