Time For a New Washer!

We are moving into our new house soon which just finished being built. The time has come to choose all of our appliances - including the washer and dryer. I'm torn over certain models and brands.

1. Maytag Maxima MHW5500FC
1.1 (runner up) Whirlpool Duet WFW85HEFC
- Part of me is already leaning towards these two choices. As many of you know, I owned a WP Duet WFW72HEDW at our previous house which had been nothing but positive performance and it was still running fine when we moved out. It was clocking in at 3 years old.

2. LG WM3770HVA
2.1 (runner up)WM3270CW
2.2 (runner up) WM3670HVA
- One thing I really like about LG's turbowash line is the built in re-circulation pump. It looks to be a very effective set up and seems to be a quiet machine all around.

3. Samsung WF45K6500AV
3.1 (runner up) WF45M5500AP

- I know what your thinking, how could i even put up Crapsungs. I don't really have much of a preference towards the Samsungs as much as I do of the WP/Maytag and LG. But I'd like to hear people who have had experience with the newer ones. One thing that spoke out right away to me is the availability of the spider...and bearings. Whereas the LG and WP units now sell the assembly by the tub with the exception of bearings sold by LG.

I want to hear your guys and gals experience on these units or similar to them. I know already that the Maytag and WP unit is going to be an auto win for me but I'm willing to try something new.

I have zero experience. But in your position, I might be very tempted to consider the LG simply because it would be "something new and different".

I've said so much about the LG turbo wash on this forum I'll keep it short. That machine is effective and FAST.

Speed isn't everything.  I think there's something to be said about familiarity with similar machine and you know what to expect, along with better control.  I say get the Maytag Maxima 5500.  Far more flexible than any LG. The towels cycle on the Duet has more inerim spins.  I'd venture to guess the Power Wash cycle on the Maxima does too.  Maxima's Heavy Duty is probably similar to the Duet.  From what I've observed, the Normal cycle deltes an interim spin.  Frigilux loved his Maximas he had at his old house.  From the level of cleaning, he could see why I love my Duet somuch.

I would not buy the LGs based upon my experience of them never using tap hot water to fill. If you want a true hot wash you are required to use either Sanitize or Allergiene. I have the older version of the Duet and we absolutely love it. The newer models are improved in every way. However, I do agree that the LG turbowash machines are fast and effective, but they only do one rinse for the most part using turbowash. The new Duets perform two rinses but no interim spins between them, and I would expect the Maximas to be the same. Also, it is my experience that the LG machines also have suspension that seems to get loose after a few years. This increases wash time dramatically. If I were to buy an LG based machine, it would be the Kenmore variant since they have the Auto Soak feature which is VERY useful. Good luck!

My next door neighbors bought the GE washer from hell. Top load impeller with the tea cup of water and stuff had to be run thru again and again. After just 4 years, it died. They got a cheap Whirlpool with an agitator, water level control and temperature, she is happy now, half the time and one load through and clothes are cleaned.

My advice would be to avoid the newer ge washer dryer set since a neighbor had the newer ge washer dryer set she had to have them exchange for another brand since the ge washer was making the clothes she wash orange so I saw the new model the neighbor got and it was the newer whirlpool washer dryer set this model to be precise

While the "normal" cycle defaults with one deep rinse, it does also do two spin spray rinses that are very effective. You can also add up to four more deep rinses to the cycle. I usually run an extra rinse for two deep rinses, plus the spray rinses. This machine really rinses well.

When set for "hot" without water heating, it does spray a few cold water blasts into the detergent dispenser and down into the sump to be sprayed onto the spinning load in a sort of catalyst type action that quickly soaks the load with detergent concentrate. Then it fills with tap hot. I find the water temp in the machine is not too far off from what the water heater delivers, but I'll push the "steam" button to engage the heater when I want really hot water for deep cleaning whites.

I've been very pleased with my LG.

I'd be torn

between the LG w turbowash /Maytag Maxima's too!

I thought Whirlpool was changing their designs but I have no clue when that is supposed to happen.

I loved my Maytag Maxima set. Would purchase another in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, they are too deep for my current laundry space.

Maximas and Duets are pretty rock solid. I wish they had a recirc pump and a smaller gap from the tub to the frame.

We don't move much LG or Samsung anymore because thats all we seem to replace.

Depending on the price you need to be at, you can get a set of Electrolux 517's for around 849 each and they will walk all over the other machines in terms of clean-ability and speed.

Very happy with my LG washer. Its very quiet, effective and efficient. I have the same model LG washer that Rich aka Golittlesport has. The LG3770 is the successor to the model 3570 that we have. The diffenence is the wash vanes, the 3570 has the wash vanes in the back of the drum and comes little more than half way to the front. The 3770 has wash vanes that go from front to back.
I use TurboWash on every load. Cotton/Normal defaults to it, Bright Whites and Towels are optional use. With TurboWash it will spray rinse on each interim spin and the final spin. I usually add an extra deep rinse. The final spray rinse is not cheap on time...a full 2 mins and it reaches from front to back, spinning at 600+ rpms, then ramping up to the final spin speed that I have set at 1200...depending on the load and how its distributed in the drum.
TurboWash does same time and I like the fact that the water and detergent is being recirculated back onto the load. When Turbowash is used on other cycles, it does change the cycle some. If I dont use Turbowash on lets say Bright Whites , it will do a deep fill up to the door, and no spray rinses, add Turbowash and it uses less water, yet adds spray rinse along with deep rinses.
Here is another thing to consider about Whirlpool built front loaders....a Maytag dealer near me will not stock Maytag/ Whirlpool front loaders since they have control/ computer issues. She told me that she has had many people return the washers for just that issue and she said when they do fail and its after 6 to 8 months of use, getting the parts can be a nightmare...now this was some time ago, things might have changed, but I checked recently if she had any and she told me hell no...lol

Decided to head down to the showroom to see the LG's mainly in person. I noticed that the price of the WM4370HKA was lower than the 3770, so I went to it instead. Right off the bat, the doors squeaky plastic bugged me a lot, even toys are more sturdier than that. The dryers door didn't make that sound however. Checked out the Maytag's and there were no surprises there, same thing I've been used to using my WFW72 just with a bigger tub and more options plus a heater and felt sturdier than the LG. At this point, I do feel as if I am leaning more over to Maytag than ever, but it may still change.

I will say there are very true things brought up by users so far. One of that being the computer issues nmassman44 mentioned. In fact I faced computer related issues with my WFW72 and the famous spinning issues faced by many others of these units as well on this site. Nonetheless however, I did fix this issue by tampering with the wires and making sure all of them were firmly into the computer and stator. After that I never experienced that issue again. No doubt in my mind WP has most likely taken care of that issue.

That being said, I think I will look into Electrolux unit mentioned by jkbff as well.

I'm not to sure about GE front loaders. They seem to have issues with balancing and vibration.

I have lost my faith in GE's front loaders.

Every right height machine I've sold has had the bearings fail within 18 months.

They say they have sourced new bearings and solved most of the failures of the previous generation units. I am just too scared to sell them. My customers had to do a lot of complaining to GE to get help on the out of warranty repairs.

And the winner is...

Just measured the laundry room, and it does not suffice to fit a Maytag Maxima unit...Looks like LG is going to be the route on this one. I really did want the Maytag but it just is too deep to fit into the room. If I go with the Maytag Maxima unit, then the machine would come up into the doorway - mind you that the depth of the washers wall was measured at 33 inches but that's from the back wall up to the door molding and the no washer can be pushed up flat against the wall. I'll keep all of you posted but thanks for all the help!

Both Units Arrived!

Today, the LG WM4370HKA and DLEX4370K were delivered. Didn't fully hook them up yet but I must say, both these units look amazing still. I removed the shipping bolts from the washer which was a little confusing at times but if its one thing I learned, these bolts never pull straight out but rather, have to be angled in order to come out. I also was very eager to power up the machine, so with the shipping bolts removed, I put it into a drain and spin mode with the drain hose pointed down into the floor drain, to my best surprise was this things quiet spinning. This has to be hands down the quietest washer I've ever used. In fact the dryer easily seems louder than the washer. I think this is going to be interesting...
