Howdy Guys,

Just picked up a Veg-O-Matic at a yard sale for 0.75. It's older than the one in my link, in good condition but dirty. Do y'all have any tips for using it? Does it work well? Or is it just cool to look at?

Thanks,
Sarah

My stars, I thought you meant me!

I generally use my VOM for thin-slicing cubumbers for a pickled cucumber salad. Slicing onions with it is a DISASTER! I think it does better slicing them...longitudinally? Not so they come out in rings, but the other way.

I was surprised to find out that it really does make Mountains of Julienne Fries. Thought it would gag on a potato but it did a nice job.

Guess it all depends on how sharp the blades are. Give it a run through various things and then see if it's "for show or for blow."

a stiff brush,

a little hand dish liquid, and some hot water will take care of it.

People love these things, or loathe them. I haven't seen one at a decent price in a yard sale in ages!

I love mine!!!

I have 3 or 4 of them (just for parts in case one breaks) and it's the best thing ever!! I grew up with Mom making home made french fries in the "Fry-Daddy" deep fryer and they tasted SO GOOD! I use a much better deep fryer now but still use the Veg O Matic to slice and dice. I even have the optional fruit cutter (never use it but I do have it). :)

You will enjoy it. Just make sure that you clean it well and oil the springs at the side (WD40 is OK for this). Otherwise sometimes the starch from the potatos gets in there and dries. Then it doesn't work that well (gets stuck).

Have fun with it!!

Oh Peter

A man after my own heart! I L O V E my V-slicer! I have worn out two in the last 25 years, it is always on my counter ready to go.
Hey I got my first Kenwood Chef like yours. Any idea where I might find the optional attachments? What did they offer for these as attachments?

I think I might try the Veg-o-Matic after this post! I always thought they were just a gimmick.

Jon, which model Kenwood did you get? I have the early version a700d from the 50's and also a model 901. Inbetween was the 701 models and unlike KA, the attachments for each don't always work with each other. Ebay is the most liely source for the attachments. In fact I recently won the blender attachment for my model 901, from the UK, it ended up costing me about $60 total incl shipping and its the cheaper plastic one, then within about two weeks I find a glass one at the thrift store for something like $2.99. I'll keep and eye out for attachments as it's more likely they'll be here than in the US for the earlier models. You may have noticed that the latest Sears Elite mixer is actually a Kenwood but the don't seem to sell it with attachments. They also sell the Sears Elite blender, again a Kenwood, the blender jar from that fits the mixer but they don't sell it seperately. Now whether that jar fits the older Kenwoods I don't know.

Amazing fries

Y'all,

My husband and I were both amazed by the fries. He washed in the dishwasher and it came out sparkling clean. It's got great early graphics, so I'll make a habit of handwashing, but what fun. Onion (dicing) came out well but was hard to clean.

Best,
Sarah

Have a "V" sklicer that has been used only about 5 times since purchased new three years ago. Rarely make french fries, and find can slice vegs and onions faster by hand in the time it takes to get the thing out of the box and set up.

IIRC the name is "The original "V" Slicer" as Seen on TV. Think they are also called "mandolins".

Last time had the thing out, it was left too close to the oven and the caddy part softened (other than the metal blades/veg holder the entire unit is plastic), still works and who knows, may find use for the thing yet.

Kenwood Mixer

Have a MIB "Rival" (made by Kenwood, just rebaged) and it works a treat. It is so sad Kenwood sold out to Delonghi, sort of like Hobart KitchenAid mixers being made by Whirlpool; the units look the same but are of not the same quality. Have heard reports of the newer Kenwood/Delonghi mixers "choking" on heavy cookie batter, something my Kenwood sails through. with ease. Same problems seem to be occuring with the Whirlpool built KitchenAid mixers. Hard to believe but Hobart KitchenAid mixers of all vintages still go for BIG dollars. Many report their mothers will under no circumstances let them even borrow their Hobart built KitchenAid mixers. Even more remarkable is the fact that there are still many, many of the original Hobart built KA mixers still happily chugging away.

For those who do not know the story, originally Hobart built the small "KA" units to give away to employee's spouses and eventually as a way of entering the small appliance market. Until that time Hobart only built commercial mixers, of which even the smallest was too much for Mrs.American Average Housewife. The small "KA" mixer was an instant hit. Small, built for the duration and with enough power to tackle everything from heavy batters to whipping cream.

I have also heard mandolins and "V" cutters called "slaw boards"If the user isn't careful-they could get a manicure!I have a few Kenwood Built Mixers-including one built for "Viking" that has a motor that is 3-4 times stronger than the KA machines-That Viking could almost mix cement!Hobart did and still does make a line of what is called "bench mixers"that resemble hoime models. The Hobart ones are much more expensive-like around $2000.Williams Somona was selling them for a short time-Excellent machines. You shift speeds on them something like a car transmission-you shift "gears" in it.the motor runs at a constant speed. Also some core drill drive motors I serviced worked the same way.Black & Decker,Milwaukee.
