Vintage Food Advertisements: Part Twelve

The beans were quite good, but another example of how classics like Chuck Wagon Beans evolve over time. Most of today’s recipes include a fair amount of brown sugar and often bacon, as well. I enjoy trying older recipes if only to compare the vintage versions to their contemporary counterparts.

I, too, grew up in a Coke household. If my sister and I asked for Coke at a restaurant and the response was, “Is Pepsi OK?” we’d always opt for some other beverage. Just for kicks, I switched to Pepsi one summer maybe 10 years ago and upon returning to Coke, was bowled over by how many bold flavors it has. Pepsi was clean and simple by comparison.

I'd never heard of C&C drinks until I saw an old ad for them hanging on the wall at Cracker Barrel.

The best baked beans I ever ate are called "Texas Baked Beans". I first had them in 1972 when we visited my mom's friend Thelma Cooper in Ft. Worth. We were so impressed with them that she gave my mom the recipe. We had them often after that, but I've only made them a few times since my mom passed away in 1995. They have bacon strips on the top. I'll have to try to find the recipe, and post it here.

I’m not familiar with Texas Baked Beans, but my Mom always put bacon strips on top of Hot Dogs and Beans when she made them.  This dish was a favorite of mine and she always made it for my birthday, per my request.

 

It was simply VanDeKamps Pork and Beans poured into a pyrex dish, sliced hot dog rounds mixed in, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, drizzled with Heinz Ketchup and raw bacon strips laid on top, then baked until hot and bubbly and the bacon crispy.  Served with buttered english muffins toasted under the broiler so the tops were crispy/crunchy and the bottoms were soft and chewy.  Yum!  I still make this, only now I use Bush’s Baked Beans.  One of David’s favorites now too.

C & C

When I was growing up in Northern Ireland 50 years ago C&C was the major supplier of various lemonades - this was before Coke & Pepsi had achieved much, if any, market penetration - I had no idea that they were an American corporation, I always thought they were just a local manufacturer

They are still around, with their US soft drink headquarters in New Jersey. The company is based in Ireland, and has been in business since 1852.

I had forgotten about their C&C Television division. In 1955 they purchased the RKO Radio Pictures film library from General Tire & Rubber, which had just acquired RKO from Howard Hughes. TV stations who bought 16MM film packages from them got a life-of-print lease for those titles. The RKO introduction (with the radio tower) was removed, and a "C&C Movie time" title inserted. The end frames with the RKO triangle were also replaced with C&C. Commercials for C&C soda were shown during the original airings. Since the stations got rights to show these films until they were worn out, some prints still exist, and may still be being shown. Some VHS tapes and DVDs of RKO titles are sourced from these. The C&C versions also sometimes ended up as 16MM rental prints for schools, etc. Our HS saw a Marx Brothers movie in the early 70's that was such a print. The contrast in these prints is intentionally low, due to the TV technology of the time they were transferred. Warner now owns the rights to RKO titles, and has made their DVDs and Blu-rays from better sources, such as 35MM fine grain masters.

the guy in the Pepsi ad, looks like my dentist, who set up practice in like 1962 or 1963, and was my dentist until I moved away in 1986
