My moms birthday is coming up soon and I'd like to get her a vintage gift from the year she was born ('56) or at least the same decade. She likes vintage items of all kinds from her childhood, everything from candy to appliances. I've got no idea whatsoever of what I'll get her. I'd like something on the small side because I'll have to ship it to her but I don't even know where to start. If you were to get a gift from the 50's, what would you prefer?

Just a thought, but among the things small enough to send, I would like a fountain pen, and who doesn't like getting a handwritten note? There are some inexpensive Sheaffer school pens from the 1950s that you can still buy from this site (Pendemonium.com); or they also have some circa 1950s ballpoints if fountain pens seem too exotic.

No connection with them except I've bought from them for many years and the owners are great people.

If you have any antique malls or co-ops there, one or more of the stalls/spaces will likely be dedicated to '50s vintage items large and small.  You can at least get some ideas, or if prices are reasonable, find and purchase the gift too.

What about a bottle of perfume in a fragrance that was popular in the 1950's?

How about a framed advertisement?  There are some nice ads for sale on Ebay, first one that automatically comes to mind is the 1956 Chevrolet - maybe not the most-feminine subject but VERY 1956.  But that would just be the beginning of choices.  China, silverware, appliances, furniture, fabrics, fashion...
