Vintage Kenmore Electric Dryer

<span style="font-size: medium;">I went thrifting yesterday and happened across this beauty at a Habitat For Humanity Restore store in western New Jersey. Was not sure of the vintage (1967?), it had no price, (nor did anyone know when I asked). I sure was tempted to buy it, I'm such a sucker for lighted consoles. But I really looking for a matching dryer for my Maytag. I hope someone can rescue this. </span>

Wish I could figure out what the left half of the console says.  The right part of it says auto dry off.

Bob, it looks to me like it reads "Maximum."  Is that the temp control then?

 

She's a beautiful girl -- if not a lady -- even if it's only skin deep.  I hope she finds a loving home.

I think Ben, Bob, and Ralph are correct - This looks to me like a '1964 model, and yes, that switch on the left does say "Maximum Auto Dry", and its a flip toggle for on /off on that feature.

The dryer looks to be in nice external shape - LOVE the porcelain top. It looks to be in pretty nice shape inside, maybe not minty, but not bad at all I don't think.

Something looks odd though to me, usually I've seen a center bolt cover in the middle of the drum bulkhead. It is often stainless. This dryer appears to not have one at all? Maybe John knows the differences in these.

I have seen that drum style without a center bolt cover, but don't know what's the story behind the difference.

This model had a plastic rear bearing . The drum shaft was mounted on the back of the drum and went thru the bearing and held in with a c/clip.

It definitely looks like a 64, but I am thinking this is a 1965 Model 800. There were two 800 models that year, the standard which we see fairly often, and one where the washer was an alphabet model, I believe. This dryer would be the match to that one. The dial more closely resembles those of other 65 models, and in particular, that 65 800 model has those vertical chrome strips across the console. There was only one 800 for 1964 which looked very different.

This dryer looks like it is decent condition. Hopefully someone does grab this.

If it has that different bearing it is a late 65 or 66 model.I just got one of those dryers but it is a 1965 Lady kenmore the match to the washer that turqouisedude dude has only its white.

It's very close, but:

It's not quite the LK, it's one down from that. The LK's console light is different in appearance.

Vintage Kenmore Clothes Dryer...

I "REALLY" like THIS Dryer....

Lighted Console (I Think), Soft Heat, Full-Width Door.

But I take it there was no Solid-State Sensor. That was first seen on the 1965 Lady Kenmore Dryer.

But I think this is a high-end Kenmore just the same.

The year in my opinion?? Because I have not seen a Kenmore with this style control panel???

I am going to say between 1963 and 1965....

Probably the #2 between 1963 and 1965..

Just my guess.... Someone needs to save this beauty, I dying to see what the Matching Washer looks like.

Late 1965-6 Hi End KM Dryer

This is indeed an interesting dryer because of it combination of features, it has ALL the functional features of the original 1964 LKM dryers right down to the exact cycles and timer knob. But the machine is newer as pointed out by several members as it has the last style drum and rear drum bearing, this is also the very last of the old smaller drum inefficient [ slow in the electric versions, gas versions of this dryer had a 37,000 BTU burner which still made for very quick drying ] design as WP was already starting to produce the newer style dryers.

 

This dryer did indeed NOT have the electronic sensor system and instead used a very unique time temperature system that worked very well, the Maximum Auto Dry switch added about ten extra minutes of temperature satisfied time to the heat period of the cycle for hard to dry items like sleeping bags and stuffed pillows. The first full year line KM dryer to have an electric sensor dry was the 1965 LKM, however interestingly in late 1965 when the 65 LKM came out they also started producing the 64 LKM dryer for the next year with the fully electronic sensor system exactly like the 65 LKM dryer.

 

In our collection I have a pair of turquoise LKMs and the dryer is this later one with the EC.

Is this the same or similar time-temperature control system as in the 1960 Lady Kenmore I have? That system is remarkably accurate.

New vs. Old styles.

When did WP switch from this older design of dryer to the more modern 29" dryer we all know and love? Did it happen all at once, or was the design switch phased in over a period of time and models? When did the older style cease production, and what model was the last?

They made this style dryer with the stretch belt,smaller drum and blow the lint up your nose when its running filter into 1966,then that same year they started producing the the dryer we all know and love with the long lintscreen.
