Vintage Maytag A407 timer seized?

Hi, everyone! My Maytag A407 set is on the ropes. Both the dryer and washer have stopped functioning correctly recently. It's cute, it's like they're lovebirds or something, when one goes down the other as well.

I'd like to focus on the A407 washer. I believe the timer has seized. Mechanically each stage works if I manually turn the dial. I can hear the timer ticking but it won't self advance to the next stage.

Any tips on how to troubleshoot? I'd hate to call it quits as I changed the belts a month ago and it runs super smooth.

Hey, thanks for the link. I'll take a look. It seems if I send it in it's about 85 for the recondition. I'll keep that in the back of my mind as an option. I'll wait and see if others might reply. Thanks!

I had the exact same problem with my A408 a few years ago, so I opted to replace the timer rather than repair it. It's easy if you keep your wits about you and keep track of the original wiring. I took a photo before I pulled off all the spades from the tabs. It's been working great ever since.

I replaced a timer at 9yo. Just pull one wire off the old one at a time and put it in the same place on the new one. Need to use the 'reconditioned' option so you have both at the same time. Prices should be comparable once you send back the core for credit. That link isn't the only one but it IS in Canada and doesn't have to cross borders which can be costly (for nothing).

Found this older thread. Where can i order parts like the brass one he troubleshot in post# 5? Maybe this is the problem. It would be cheaper than 85.

Maytag A107 Timer Won't Advance

This morning after the first spin, the timer on my Maytag A107 (1974 Model year) quit advancing. You can advance it manually and the cycles will start, but of course, you have to advance it again manually to the next cycle. You can hear the timer actually ticking, but it won't move. Yogi...

Before I perform Maytag brain surgery, do I need to take the wires off? I'm thinking maybe I should just remove the timer from the washer but leave the wires on.

How do I take off the timer? Is that the two horizontal bolts at the front dial?

Okay i've got the timer removed from the washer with the wires still on. And I removed four screws that keep the casing together.

How do I actually pull it apart? It's not coming apart. I think maybe the middle prong is doing something.

Fixing A Kingston Timer

It is usually not a good idea to take the timer itself apart, hopefully it will go back together, you most likely only needed to remove the timer motor and repair or replace it, you may need a complete timer at this point, good luck keep us posted.

ok, thanks for the reply. It seems different from what Ultramatic did to fix his timer. It was the center plastic gear that was broken in his case.

Besides I just removed 4 casing screws, the casing is still intact. It seems to replace just the timer you'd have to remove these same screws anyways. I can easily put the screws back.

In any case I'm thinking to replace the entire timer unit, considering the age. Even if I replace the center gear something else inside the timer may break soon enough.

replaced the timer

I replaced the timer but it's still not working. Maybe even a step backwards. The main issue is the tub won't fill with water. Nor am I certain if it can self advance the cycle. The perm press doesn't seem to work at all either.

When installing i put two of the wires (one of which was the pilot light) in the wrong place and turned it on. Would that blow a fuse or something? I've since corrected it. The pilot light turns on.

Maybe it's not the timer? What should I try next? Any ideas?
